maybe you just dont have it installed!

I think you might be right. In the services window I right click on Services and select "All Tasks" - Send Console Message

It gives an error that says the "Server Service has not been Started"

I reckon it's Trebz revealing all our IP's with his Super Moderator-ness and trying to mess with our minds. ;)

All he'd have to do is change the colour of the forums slightly and we'd all have embolisms.

Wij, go to services, find the service 'Messenger', turn off. Also stop it from auto starting. It's all in services, dead easy.

OK - Will do.

furofknight, just a little something to discourage you from the XP firewall:

One of the "Services" provided with Windows XP (and active by default) is this:

Remote Registry

Description:
Enables remote users to modify registry settings on this computer. If this service is stopped, the registry can be modified only by users on this computer.

Nice to know, eh?

I know I can turn off the messenger service, but fucking hell.. I've never had junk mail like that before... has anyone else?

Plus, the annoying thing is that I can't get the ip of the sender, as of course NEWS FLASH wont resolve anything..

(Oh and my wireless network card is unplugged, so it's not my mate having a laugh)
Yeah i got that also, quite lame if you ask me.

The only other messenger msg i have had online was from dimebag i think, a while ago in #barrysworld saying i had been caught for using a warez'd copy of win2k, i think he did it to loads of ppl in #barrysworld :D

Thanks for that, FB. I'm sure this service is pretty secure but I've disabled it now. ;)

You know, win2k/nt/xp. In a command promt if you type net send xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx blahblah, assuming the recipient has 2k/nt/xp they'll get that message (if the service is turned on).

Or for people on networks, typing 'net send useridhere followed by a lovely message' - It'll irritate the hell out of whoever you're talking too as well. ;)

I would also like to point out that remote registry alteration is useful for that little remote XP option. Basically for people who b0rk their PC and can get a friend to sort it out for them over the net.

Probably.

True, but that 'friend' could also install a trojan directly into

HKLM > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Run

and the other person would be none the wiser ;)
