net send advertising?

I just received a net send:

'Message from NEWS FLASH to (my ip) on 8/20/2002 7:16:07PM

Introducing PORGUS.com Your no. 1 source for Ring Tones, Logos, Celebrity Voicemail and Phone Pranks'

I know I can turn off the messenger service, but fucking hell.. I've never had junk mail like that before... has anyone else?

Plus, the annoying thing is that I can't get the ip of the sender, as of course NEWS FLASH wont resolve anything..

(Oh and my wireless network card is unplugged, so it's not my mate having a laugh)

You know, win2k/nt/xp. In a command promt if you type net send xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx blahblah, assuming the recipient has 2k/nt/xp they'll get that message (if the service is turned on). ->

Can you do that to any Windows box with an IP? I thought you had to be on the same network or summit.

Apparently you can do it to anyone.

And yes, in hind-sight that probably would have been a good idea, Miles. Can't be arsed to sort it now, I can always reconnect/turn off messenger service if people start fucking about.

p.s. fuck off sar/jas :)

Only when I'm on the same network as someone.

Netware had a great msg system at college - from one machine you could spam every machine on the Exeter College and Exeter University network. You had to run afterwards though - admins soon hunted the machine down

Net send over the net always fails on me. Even if the host has it switched on.

Wij, go to services, find the service 'Messenger', turn off. Also stop it from auto starting. It's all in services, dead easy.
