My 10 year old has been saving for a laptop (as I refuse to buy her one upfront -importance of delayed gratification etc..)
She wants a net book not a laptop.
Is that ok?
Its for homework, club penguin and basic stuff.
Please someone tell me the difference -so I dont appear to be the dumb arse I actually am;)

Netbooks are laptops, only much smaller and less capable performance wise.

What kind of price range are you talking about anyway?

If it's email, word processing, and youtube then most netbooks should be ok. ( although some struggle with 1080p youtube videos/dvds ).

netbook = underpowered laptop pretty much, usually more compact/thinner/lighter as well.

And no disk drive.. Remember that if she has a load of CDs she wants on her computer

Yeah its just a small, lightweight laptop, usually powered by an Atom processor. They're good because they're easy to carry around and battery life is generally decent. They lack DVD drives though so everything is received either online or via USB.

The Reg has quite a good buyer's guide and reviews here:
Back-to-school 10in Netbooks ? reghardware

Its about a year old, but its still pretty relevant. FWIW I have a Samsung one running Win7 and its a good little piece of kit. I'd order online, but if you want to have a look at them before ordering John Lewis or Micro Anvika have reasonable ranges.

Be thankful she's not hassling you for a tablet ;)

Get her a mini-whiteboard, a board pen, and a piece of cloth.

I am sure they know loads but none of what you said involves using a CD (DVD) player. Maybe we should also point out that it doesn't have a floppy disk drive either?

CokeNoze is old.

My 15 month old can find Peppa Pig and Timmy Time on the Sky+ Planner. Not randomly, click, click, click and she's there. I have no fucking idea how she's doing it. She phoned me the other day. She got hold of my missus' phone, got into contacts, found the picture of Daddy and called me. She can only speak a dozen words but she can call me on the phone. I'm scared.

When I was five I knew how to turn on the telly, find the right Tintin betamax tape, pop it in and watch it.. Basically the same system

And I am not old :(

Bevare of the internet though! It is infested with trolls, porn and viruses! Teach her how to use it before you let her have a go at it alone

Imagine if she found her way onto FH o_O

I know for a fact that Everz was 8 when he joined FH. Not sure about Toht his age, but one can only check his mental state from his posts on FH.

So.... bascially a net book is ok?

They are great - I use mine a lot - it has far more battery time than any laptop so its great for use when your out and about (mine can manage 9 hours max -5-6 more reasonably with solid usage).

Mine was just a cheap windows 7 Acer netbook but I've been really impressed with its performance and they are only about £200 brand new so not so terrible if they lose/break it.

It has a load of USB ports so I can use it as a mobile hub to charge my phone etc. It has Micro SD for expanding the memory/transferring files or getting pictures off of my digital camera without the USB lead.

When my kids are a bit older I'll definately buy them netbooks - far more practical than tablets.

I know. I think she's building a doomsday device :(
Real life Stewie tbfh. As female will probably try to kill father instead of mother.

BEWARE THE DEATH RAY!
