I was on my way down the A1 when I hit a deer and smacked up the front of my car.

Now, I have an Audi A8, just bought it in November (used) and my insurance company are going to write it off! Because the car is worth maybe 8 - 10k and the repair cost is just over 6k.

Does anyone with any experience know if I'm likely to be able to offer a bit of cash towards the repairs in order to get it repaired and not written off? The insurance company are closed Monday and I'll be fretting all weekend. :(

When the insurance writes the car off it becomes their possession but sometimes they don't want it at all. Just ask em. If they don't want the car you can keep and repair it with the money you get from them.

But be advised that such massive damage isn't repaired easily and will most likely have a serious impact on the lifespan of the car.

They are not giving me a courtesy car becasue they are writing it off.

If I read the policy right, they will take the rest of the years insurance premiums for themselves because they have 'fulfilled their contract'.

I was ok, the deer didnt come through the window.

The damage seems to be mainly body panels, though the air con pipes got bent too.

I've gone off venison.

You killed Bambi :(

As for your car...just make sure you don't accept the first write off value they offer you. Get an independent value based on the car's model, year, condition and most importantly mileage. If you know someone in the trade see what that model, year and mileage is booking at in the Glass's guide (that's the trade guide published yearly on market prices for all car models). That will give you some idea of what they should be paying you.

I know, I'm sickened. It was dark and it hurdled the central reservation in front of me. I had just enough time to shout 'oh no' before i hit it.

I'm determined to have my car repaired. I figured, if the cost of the repairs is above a certain amount, they write it off. So what if I offer to pay the difference?

Hopefully that will do it, though it will cost me a couple of grand I bet!!

If you ever plan to sell the car on, massive repairs will seriously harm its credibility. But squeeze every penny out of the insurance company, they can be such a scam sometimes, you pay good money to them so they should uphold their end.

car insurance companies are the work of satan, i can only get insurance from a handful of companies since ive had my engine replaced (from an idenctical model and year), apparently that counts as modified engine so im automatically a boy racer.
utter shit heads, hope they all burn in hell

hope you do sort your car out, a mate of mine flipped his car ending in a write off, he swears he saw it on the market a few months later though. dunno what insurance company he used but he thinks they wrote it off, flogged it to someone who did the repairs, everyoens a winner except the policy holder.

id rather drive without insurance if it were legal

Yeah, what they do is:

If the car repair bill is > 60% of the value then wrtite it off
Policy holder pays £350 excess
Policy holder loses their premiums (because insurance company has 'fulfilled' its contract)
Insurance company decides what the car is worth (usually between the trade-in value and the retail value) and pays that out
They then sell the car on as salvage for a few grand
The salvage buyer repairs it & sells it on for profit

So, in the case of my car (according to glasses guide)
repair bill is £6,000
retail value is £10,000 (ie if I wanted to go out & buy it)
trade-in value = £5,600
price between trade-in & retail price is £7,800
repair bill as % of this (rip off) figure is 77%
so car gets written off
so instead of paying for £6,000 repair bills the insurance company:
takes £350 excess
takes rest of my premiums (£250)
pays out (hopefully) £7,800
so the insurance company effectively pay out £7,200
HOWEVER
They then flog the car for salvage. Even if they only get £2,500 for the car
their final effective loss is £7,200 - £2,500 = £4,700
Neat, eh? They pay out £1,300 less than if they had it repaired
The policy holder though, loses:
£350 excess
£250 premiums
and if they want to buy the same car for £10,000
they only got £7,800 off the insurance company
therefore another £2,200 out of pocket
final cost to policy holder £2,800

And this can happen to anyone!

I stand corrected.

Perhaps my next vehicle should be ex-Soviet military. A T-54 perhaps?
