Just got a 1mb connection after upgrading from 512k, only problem is i get same speed roughly as before ;/ about 60-80kbs(that's the best speeds i have had :/) download speed which is definetly not right for 1mb line(should be around 100kbs?).I have asked a few people any ideas why it's so slow, they told me to use an internet accelerator perhaps? so does anyone know any ways i can boost the speed?or any internet speed accelerators that are free?

If there isn't any good ones for free then please show me a good one to buy that you have actually used.

If your line is upgraded it should work properly at 1 mbits.

No accelerators will increase that. atleast not what im aware of.

Btw if they just upgraded it might be a ISP problem? are u sure u got it ?

Have u tried it vs a top server?

Does your modem(if u use adsl) accept higher traffic than 512?

All I can come up with tbh. not much help :(

Hi there,

Your best bet first is try running this a few times to check the average speed of your connection

ADSLGuide Speedtest

Make sure all other internet based programs are closed such as msn, icq, irc etc and try testing it a few times.

On average you should get approx 100-115k/s on a 1mb line (maybe slightly lower on adsl with the ATM overhead).

The other thing is which provider is it with? as not all adsl providers are created equal :(

Closed msn and tried that link, got 744kbs, 884kbs then 758kbs as my downstream. The thing is i am not getting 90kbs download though like it says :/

ISP is freeserve too.(do not laugh :p but their 512k connection was quite good can't work out why this isn't going full speed)

ok bt's 1mb service which freeserve basically is with a different isp but same technology etc .. you have a 50:! contention on the 1mbit to start with .. so if they other 50 ppl you are sharing with dl at the same time u lose bandwidth .. same with all adsl in the UK .. well home based ones.

Also been reading the btyahoo forums on adslguide it appears the 1mbit roll out hasnt been giving the dl speeds that ppl thought with some getting results like yours. unfortunately BT ( donno about freeserve) class this as acceptable and therefore dont do much to change it.

Could also be the warm weather creating more attenuation on the line leading to your modem not being able to connect at the full speed (maybe)

Or the fact that freeserve have over sub'd their pipe and are getting a choke there onto the backbone therefore decreasing the speed you are getting.

thats what you get for having a colombian cartel bananaboy isp.

Anyway seriously, it is true that the more ppl connected to the exchange with make your connection suckier , also the distance, it depends on a lot of factors, maybe just all the ppl that have signed up in you area to bananaboys r u isp are a bunch of ftp/edonkey leech0rs. Also get bt to test your line ( when i was in Brum and i got adsl i was getting shitty speeds due to the fact that the line was just shite ). Also take a look at your modem/router etc. If all fails just phone them and wajn at the dixon grp money stealers. Threaten to change isp, that sometimes helps

anyway Nerf you.

/hugs and kisses.

if ya want to test yer real download speed, download something from a big company, like Nvidia or Microsoft there you can usually hit yer cap or very close to it, that way you can see if theres a problem on your side or if it's somewhere else

I assume they were talking about a download accelerator/manager? It allows you to cap your download speed (almost) every time you download something.
Eg. If you are downloading a (gasp!) rvr movie and only get 10 kbit/s you can use a download accelerator to get 8 simultanious connections to that server giving you 8x10 kbit/s... which is nice. :) And if the download fails you can resume the download if the server allows it.

Just search on download.com (http://download.com.com/sort/3150-2071-0-1-3.html? ) for them and try them out. A good one is Download Accelerator Plus (DAP). I have used it for a couple of years and is perfectly happy with it. It isn't free though... link to DAP: http://www.speedbit.com/DAP7/DefaultT.asp?

Good luck!

test your speed using this:

http://www.broadbandspeedtest.net/

it is great.

If you don't get the speeds they advertise contact them if they still don't help contact OFCOM and the ASA both will fine them for incorrect advertising.

I work for an ISP and know these things;)

As others pointed out, you maybe connecting to a server with a poor upload speed. You might find its the other end with the problem not your ISP at all.

Also Im not sure but afaik, broadband is shared across a sort of local connection, the more ppl locally have it, the less you get out of it and so on.

For downloading things, I use GetRight, does me, and has multiple connections to one DL, so tends to boost a lot.

A word of advice from one who has suffered: please note that DAP (most people with grab the free version) contains seriously huge amounts of spyware / adverts that WILL eat up processing time and bandwidth. It's acknowledged as one of the most wasteful of computer resources around. Don't download it unless you have a seriously high-end PC (P4 3.6, 2048 RAM)
