I bought a stealth 60mm fan to stick on my heatsink in a budget attempt at a silent cpu cooler. Problem is the fan is about 3cm thick, I don't have any screws to attatch it with as the other fan is only about 1cm. Anyone know what size screws I need and hopefully where I can get them?

Your best bet would be to just take the fan and heatsink to your local B&Q or hardware store, they usually have loads of trays of different sized screws just have a root through them and see which ones will fit best.

So you want to screws the screws (shaddap Wij) into the fan or the heat-sink?

If its the heat-sink, I would imagine they are going to be about m4 or m5 thread, by however long they need to be.

If its the fan, it depends if its plastic like a case fan. ie. you will need the self tapping screws used for attaching case fans to your case.

What make heatsink is it?

You bought the smallest fan you could find in an attempt for quietness?

I think the fact that its a stealth fan is where Cask is going with this, not the 60mm bit.

Still a bigger fan and a duct would be quieter, less rpm per cft shifted or something, works for me anyhow :)

Yeah wish I had done that now. Spent ages in homebase but doesn't look like I'll find the screws I need. Oh well serves me right trying to save money :(

Sorry Wilier, I missed your reply due to all of the Wijisms :(

Current HSF is a Q-Tec jobby. I bought it on the highstreet due to the "Improved Noise Reduction" but it still sounds like a closet cyclone.

The vantec fan is 25mm thick so I can't just recycle the old screws. Should have taken your advice and just gotten a zalman, prolly end up spending the same amount of cash.

I had a similar problem...I used wood screws (self tapping) and forced them into the soft aluminium of the heatsink, its a bit amateurish, but if I wanted to, I could hang by the fan and it wouldn't fall off :D

Wood screws sounded a bit adventurous to me so I orderered one of these to get something that would work. And I gotta say it's the quietest CPU fan I've ever (barely) heard. Not sure what temp is like but as long as it's working I'm happy.

Don't even know the PC is switched on now and my Sonata is the noisiest thing in the room. Might have to get another.

I have a 90mm fan on my heatsink, running slowly. Really quiet inside the Sonata, and running at a cool 40 degrees on an overclocked Barton :)
I need to find a way to quieten my 9800 Pro now, without me putting screws through ram chips. Sleeping time will be pwnz0red!!

Yep.
