But it doesn't say that. It says 'I don't need any ID',which doesn't mean 'I don't need to see your ID'.

Its a quote off GTA3, being a game based somewhere in America I think it is factually acceptable to have the english language spoken in a mangled manner.

Napster clones suck, best one for mp3s = winmx and thats crap now...

all the others are crap for everything else with lame speeds and everything..

Morpheus/Kaaza are good for speed and interface, but the chances are that they will be shut down soon.

GNUtella is proberbly the best imo. For a start, there's tons of clients for it, next it's fully p2p, so it can't be shut down, and it gives reasonable speeds. Allthough it sucks your bandwidth up if your on a 56k.

Oh, and links.

If FastTrack's P2P is shut down (or rather, discontinued at least) then the Gnutella network will be next, both are fully P2P. If you suspect one to go, then common sense points at the RIAA (or some equivalent) pursuing the other file sharing clients - primely gnutella.

That's complete arse; speed is only dependant on whoever you're leeching stuff from. I use Audiogalaxy, which although uses a web-based interface, has a huge range, with speeds no less reasonable than Napster.

Fastrack = Kaaza? I believe what makes Kazaa/Morpheus differant to GNUtella is that Kazaa isn't fully p2p. Yes, it uses the GNUtella protocol, but i believe it uses a large server for searches, rather than individual connections.

The differance is obvious. hen you connect with Kazaa, you wait untill you're connected to the network. With GNUtella proper, you connect to other clients, and you dissconnectm, and connect to more throughout your period of use. The only weak point of GNUtella is that you connect to a server to get the IPs of people to connect to. Allthough i suspect they could get around that, by chacheing known IPs, so that when you start of GNUtella, it attempts to connect to IPs from the last time you were connected. With Broadband uses, that would work quite well, then you could get more IPs from the people you're connected to...

gnutella is fully p2p, there is no central server so it is a lot harder for the RIAA to shut down. all they can do is stop people downloading the client software and advise isps to block the ports that it uses afaik.

FastTrack (P2P) = Kazaa / Morpheus / Grokster (?)

I had written a worthwhile reply questioning their claim of True P2P, but instead I'm just going to point at this and specifically:

With Gnutella and similar networks, all connected computers acts as search servers on the networks. When a search query is initiated, it is sent to 2 to 4 other computers, which in turn passes the query to more computers, and so on. Effectively, each search query traverses the entire network. This creates a huge amount of traffic. Clients on slower connections (such as modem dial-ups) cannot keep up with this amount of traffic, which slows down the entire search process.

On MusicCity, not all clients act as servers. Instead, clients on powerful connection and with faster computers are selected to become what we call "SuperNodes". SuperNodes can be seen as local search hubs. "Normal" clients connect to their "neighborhood" SuperNode to upload information about the files they share and perform searches. The selection of SuperNodes is automatic - there is no manual intervention. This is why we call it a distributed self-organizing network

Kez, without disputing the facts from Musiccioty webby, i believe that my argument still stands.

If supernodes are selected randomly, then a main server must surely oversea this. When a client connects to Kazaa/morpheus, surely they must connect to a server, which then directs them to their local supernode. Surely all supernodes must communicate with each other in order to actually create a proper network.

My point is, the system, even with the Supernode idea, still revolves around a server.

Your argument isn't actively in dispute. I fully agree that its either stupendous coding, or a main server that serves the purpose of directing people places.

Either way, their claim that its true P2P is fine by me, until someone prooves otherwise (They [Kazaa] also stood up in court and spoke of their inability to monitor downloading because they didn't house a main server)
