Names on the internet

I've discussed this for a long time with friends and it's time to hear your opinion about it

Everyone usually has a nick on the internet that they use so that people that know their names can see who they are.
So what about DAoC?
When you make an alt, do call him/her something like the first char you had, like Spankya who calls her altse Spanky and so on.
Do you want people to recognize you when you make an alt or do you wanna make a fresh start?
Why do you want to make a fresh start?

It's fun to make some really messed up names but no-one really recognizes you until you name your main although you can sometimes remember people from their playstyle like suicide-mages

I always use totally different names. In fps games I hardly ever use the same name twice, because I just keep thinking up new ones. Usually doesn't take long for people to recognise me though, if only because of the smiley ( ;

First character name was out of the blue - couldnt think of one and daughter asked if she could watch Pocahontas video - so i called character Pocahontas, surname had to be Smith after that.

All my alts are named after characters in Hitch Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy. Seen a few others around using HHGTTG names too.

As for anonymity, i do have an anon character. Play him when i dont feel like chatting to mates etc, if u just wanna play quiet an anon alt is the key.

Since I'm addicted to roleplaying games, I give my characters different names and different personas. For example Sharon would be completely opposed to Ulricke, while Elendor is the half-elven cutie (in the Arwen style ).

I TRY to roleplay as much as possible, but i dont think daoc was truly made for roleplay, as sad as it may be.

Yes my names are all roleplay-oriented, and although I don't take roleplaying that far, I do play characters with different personas. My celt believes celts are strong leadertypes and thinks elves are arrogant, luries are pesky, and firbies are smelly. I gave my celt a name which is made up of words taken from a language I invented for my own fantasy novel, basically describing her as a tough person who cares for all life but knows the hardships. And that's how I play her. My elf believes elves are gracious and superior, placing herself above any dispute with other races. She is based on my first AD&D character. My other elf is quite the opposite, more adventurous and heroic, feeling not at place in elven community but very happy with other races defending her realm.

I think DaoC would be fine for roleplay, the way RvR is implemented, but most players simply aren't interested in it. That's why I don't do it much either, but there's occasions where it can be a laugh. Still I get a bit annoyed by some obviously non-roleplay names (won't give examples).

I have tried to stick with name that I used from Old Roleplay sessions, or at least derived from them anyway. I was slightly Gutted when I found out that someone had used the name Masamune, which was my first signature name. Ryushin just kinda spwaned from that, and it was also slightly influenced by character choice and guild name, Being an NS in draconis Alumni (Ryushin Murasame meaning Dragons spirit, Dark Blade. And, yes, I know that it's really sad to base a name after a guild and char class, but it was a very long tuesday when it happened, okay?! ) But, It sounded cool, and I've become kinda legendary for my willingness to believe anything the guild tells me <just wait for the thread about me falling for a big dragon event joke etc on here, believe me, it'll happen any time soon> so the name has stuck after that.

But, because I like roleplaying, I've always kept the same surname (or, if I was truly in character, it would be the Forename) of Murasame for all of my chars since then, and I'm also pretty damn happy that no one has tried to use my name on any server to date!

I often chose names from books, altered slightly, or made them up, my favourite was my retired imperial captain from the star wars rpg, Miles Teg (from the last 2 dune books if anyones read em)
Although none of my DAOC characters have names taken from books, my blademasters surname is taken from the celtic chieftan curatacos who held out against julius cesear for 9 years, his son was granted clemency in Rome after his speech on freedom and his right to defend what he had, the romans would have achevied no great triumph had he not fought back, I rather liked the sound of it

Its the last names that carry meanings for me.

Vanyarin is the name of the race of Light Elves (The Vanyar) in Lord Of The Rings, if you've read it hard enough; They're only mentioned 2-3 times. Appropriate however since Spudgie is an Elven Light Eldritch.

didnt name any but charonel for any specific reasons, exept for cutipie, who is just adorably cute

charonel was named charonel because my tag in avp 2 was charon, ie the boatman who ferries people to the land of the dead, and was therefor fitting for an alien player , when i started daoc i just added the angelic suffix onto the end to make it sound elven and that was that , been happy with it ever since really

My alts don't tend to see the light of day after lvl 10 but here it goes

1st ever char: Sharielle Starshade (couldn't think of anything else)
2nd char: Dreama Littledream (My wedding song, Dream a little dream..how very girly of me huh)
3rd char Tapanga Mango (couldn't think of a good name so I named it after 2 paintings hanging on my wall)

As for keeping the same name thru out games ect....this is the first game I've ever played, when I move on to the next game, well, IF I move on, I might take Dreama or Tapanga with me....who knows

During beta I played a cleric called Ortega, only got to level 16 and after a chara wipe we moved to Hib. Ortega didn't seem a very firby name so I mutated it to Ortunga.

Prior to that, in early beta days I played a thane called Magnus Helmgard, father of Sven Helmgard who was named after the father of my chara from the Guardsmen Milita, a roleplay guild in UO.

My shade is called Mayonaka, which is japanese for "midnight" which was a name suggested to me over IRC but was taken, and I had an English>Japanese dictionary sat next to my pc.

My luri chanter is called Rydia, which is the name of the summoner chara from FF4

after that came ambeorix (would have been ambiorix but it was taken ) a person from flemmish history.

all are names to use in role play and therefor they have their own point of view on the realm and it's races (pretty much like ensepty sais it)

Heh, u see quite some Final Fantasy name's out there, i've tried everyone i think when was gonna make a new char, Cloud,Squll, Zell, Tifa,Edea,Rinoa, Aeris - u name em

Edea is a sb on excal, dont think the other's with ff names are active, so they could just delete their chars and let me have the names

and something totally of topic - WHY does all norsemen have beards? why cant u choose to shave the beard or something, its not like everyone LOVES beard, but they seem to think that we do - because u cant take the beard away - fight the beard!
