Mysterious stopping downloads

I've come up against a snag and I can't figure it out for the life of me. When downloading files bigger than say 20 or 30 megs downloads just seem to hang and never finish. At first I thought this was maybe Firefox's download manager having problems, but no, subsequent tests with 0.9, Internet Explorer (yes, that's how desperate I got) and download managers such as flashget seem to yield the same results.

I don't get any messages saying that the server has timed out or lost connection, the rate just seems to drop to 0k/s and stay there. Pausing and resuming the download doesn't work either.

I'm running XP SP1 on an nforce2 chipset board, 1Mbit DSL through my trusty router. I don't get problems with prolonged network activity on anything else (so far).

Any ideas?

Were all your tests getting files from the same ftp server? I remember Barrysworld FTP had this problem with downloads stopping about 2% from the end. Dunno what was causing it though.

I used to get that on BW too, but no, this is from everywhere (well, everywhere I've tried so far). And it's not FTP either, this is http downloads.
