What right do I have to even discuss this topic?
Well firstly i'm going to sign up.
Imho too many good GSPs have gone down the drain for my liking.
My experience with GSPs is this.
I hung around BW a lot, eventually wrote the original CS bot stuff with interviews with the bot developers, talked to SAS a lot, particularly around the time BW was under financial probs and when GAME took over.
I moved to Gamesinferno ( all hail the king of GSP's imho
- at one point running 30 CS servers, and you would have been lucky to find a spot in any ), where I was made a CS admin, and adminned the league, and was going to run the whole T2 GI scene, untill T2 came out and we all decided it was crap and not worth running. ( when it first came out I couldnt even run it for 6 months due to fatal exception errors ).
I knew how much it cost to the run the service, and the impact that the subsequent crash caused to the operational staff members lives.
Gamesinferno was trying to go P2P but a series of events caused that to be impossible to achieve, to go P2P a GSP needs a sufficient userbase to make it viable even if 75% of its users piss off, which is a considerable task.
I think that Barrysworld, with the support of GAME behind it, and the mentions in the press ( the gaming rags only, since gaming means shit to tabloids and broadsheets atm [ it will change eventually *mad cackle* ] )
will do ok, but I worked out that BW will need around 10k subscribers to maintain its current service, maybe more.
If the number of servers is decreased however that number will come down.
I for one think that even if BW is not viable now it will be within 5 years, which is average for most businesses, and with GAME essentially picking up the tab, it should pay for itself.
I also think that GAME will launch a host of offers with new games - ie buy a game from us get 3 months free at BW.
That type of thing.
As well as leaflets in shops and ads in the gaming rags.
BW was one of the first GSP's on the UK scene, and I think that the level of experience, the financial backing, and the support of GAME will ensure its success.
Also note that if BW fails we're going to have to go and play elsewhere, like Jolt - surely thats a good enough reason to stump up the cash in itself
PS: I know I mentioned GI a bit too much but hey it meant a lot to me
