Big hero guide coming up in new version

As a followup on my previously unambitious project on a hero class guide I've now expanded considerably on the ever interesting subject of beeing a hero ;)

I hope this guide is useful for any newly bread heroes out there. Perhaps even grownup heros and other tank classes can find pieces of information that is useful in here.

I have many many people to thank for the help on this guide. Most of which I have failed to mention in the guide as its difficult to recollect where Ive picked up all the bits and pieces that went into the guide.

New things in the guide among others is:
Mob hunting guide for a hero
New recommendation for 1H weapon
RA abilities explained
More on RvR fighting
etc. etc.

Well here it is: http://casko.net/~carlsson/Hero_Class_guide_version 2_0.doc

heheh angrysquirrel.. SS you mean spear/shield..

well modesty forbids me to tell the truth about them... Im so much looking forward to respec. Im at the moment a defensive spec... Nice in some situations... But when I respec to 42 shield, 50 spear, 6 blade and 35 parry... mmmmm

Thanks for your praise.. It warms my heart and makes me happy. *bows*

Very excellent guide that should clear up some common misconceptions of tanks in general!

Like the bit about blademasters meing a mana leech (my personal bugbear here since I have a shield/blade hero and a BM with 44 blade/CD, 42 parry), we do have more hitpoints than champions btw, I have compared with similar lvl champions who had more con than me (celt champs too) and I came out ahead by over 150 hits I think, still not a patch on those hero hit points though!

Lack of scale is a let down for us but reinforced was sweet against fins ;)

Anyway, well done m8, that must have taken a lot of work and i can tell you now it's appreciated :D

Thanks all!

I appreciate the praise. Who knows. another guide might be forthcoming. ;)

Elerand, Hope I did not diss BMs though. In many situations they are very good tanks. Against some hard hitters they take a lot of pain though. If you have the healers for it you'll be fine though as a BM never loose his aggro.

Me beeing a slow firby blunt hero have a very hard time keeping aggro at times. Lower BMs often pull aggro from me ;)

Hehehe, nah it's fine, I had a much easier time with playing a bm when I pointed out I already had a lvl 50 hero ;)

And tbh, I rarely had to use sqaull to get aggro, I kept stealing it all the time, hence why I made good use of the snow shower/detaunt combo rather than bleed :D

i thought blade dmg is based on str/dex
blunt on str
and pierce on dex??

another thing,
Enchanter = Nuker. Has AoE or PBAoE nukes depending on his spec.

Enchanter cant have any AoE nukes

best daoc guild so far!

Very nice guide, only heroes get m00se at level 15 and not L10. But that's just a small detail, good work :)

Nope, blade is based purely on str too and pierce is based on str/dex.
You got blunt right tho. :p

So what's better, go 50 LW or 50 CS? (for PvP server) and should I be Celt or Firby? :)

Hard to tell Kahlen. I have a slight preference for Celt CS wielder. Celt are quicker and more dexterious. youll get hit less often. You will also attack faster. Firbys are stronger which helps CS and LW damage.

The CS gives a lil more damage and have slightly better styles. It works very well against chain and cloth.

the LW 50 style rox though as it stuns. And you have the option of going blunt or slash. They say that slash will be gimped in 1.53 though.

All in all Id go for CS but it isnt a large issue.

6 blade = 2+3+4+5+6 = 20 points. At 39 parry it would cost 40 points to get the next level. Left over points (as with many templates) go into whatever's left :)

Plus 6 points in blades gives you taunt so you can use sword/shield to tank in any xp groups you end up in.

One n00b question, I´m told that in pvp heros can buy armsman´s polearms and still style with CS style? That would make em the best ever heavy tank out of there? :)

B

Noche, Are you sure about this? I ( very briefly ) played an armsman and I remember polearm to be a separate skill. Even if you could buy it and much less likely wield it, you still would have no skill in it, giving you a very poor damage output. Plus Heros are already the best heavy tank in the game :-D

Arya, thank you. memory and details where never my strong skill :)

Ninjastyle, the 6 pts in blade is very deliberate. it gives me taunt style with a fast weapon which I can use when going PvE. Plus it was extra points. :)

Calere: Thank you m8! :) Yes. dying fast all the time goes with the trade.

Yes...

...on PvP heros can use polearms, they treat them as spears and I think the dps on them is the same so it will only change the graphic(oh and the damage type)....I belive polearm armsman high damage comes from their ability to raise their minimum damage and their styles, I'm not to sure about this second bit though, so heros may be able to do as much damaghe with polearms..oh and you can use the CS styles.

I'm pretty sure heroes can use polearms on PvP yeh, and even chain armor, but not plate though :p

The CS gives a lil more damage and have slightly better styles. It works very well against chain and cloth.

I have to disagree on that one, cause CS got crappy styles really. The lvl 50 LW style annihilation totaly PWNZ CS styles! Only reason CS might give a little more damage is casue they got up to spd 5.8 and LW up to 5.4. But LW allso got quick weaps like 2h falcatta etc and can choose between slash and crush.....and they still got the uber annihilation (back attack, high damage, 9sec stun) :m00:

Eternal, I fully agree on the annihilation style for LW and i mention it in the guide as well. As I understand it, its still side positional thouigh and a bit difficult to pull of. It will be changed to back ( is it in 1.53? ) though and that should make it even better.

I have no experiance with LW myself but have heard that some chains are difficult to pull off/trigger. The CS styles have some nice ( and some crappy ) chains. Esp like the behind style, gives large bonus to hit/damage and has bleed styles. UBER for epic mobs where you can get behind the mob.

Would 50CS, 50 LW , rest parry be good or just a total Gimped Hero ?
