Any idea's where to shop, i'm looking for a 1.1-1.3 car. I like the look of the curvey ford escorts. Looking for a price range of up to like a grand. Checking ebay atm.

Any other good places, or anybody selling something? :)

Fiesta is a good option, you might be able to find an older model fairly cheap.

stick to ford/vauxhall/VW

that way any maintenance costs will be low, as the parts/labour are the cheapest going.

i would recommend Vauxhall-VW-ford in that order, though tbh i wouldnt have a ford anymore, but you cant beat a cheap fiesta for a starter car.

Having previously worked for Ford, if you can get a Fiesta from the first couple of years of the 'new' shape, (think it was around about '96 or summat ?) they are a lot better engineered than some of the later ones. So much so that Ford were losing more than a grand a car when they sold them. Later ones, whilst they look the same, had a lot of cost removed, so are made of slightly lower quality components.

get a vauxhall estate. They are really sturdy so if u are a noob driver and crash a lot you wont wreck it as much.

Or get a ford capri for coolness factor

Not really, You'll get shagged on insurance.

Got a micra atm but bought a car to use after a few year(a honda civic - insure that this year 1.6 lsi)

Your gonna get absolutely fucked on insurance no matter who you go with and what policy you take out.

I payed 500£ for a Nissan Micra, Only done 60,000 miles and top condition. Insurance fully comp was 1,700 but the things i got with it were worth it.

You really dont wanna go more than 1.2 litre with your first car, even if it looks shit, hang round a year and the price drop is pretty nice, Then at 21 even better.

Id recommend Micra, Corsa, Fiesta for your first car, My uncle owns a car company (Vic Young) and thats basically the advice he gave to me.

Hope that helps ;]

Being a mechanic myself, I advice you to stay away from :

Everything thats french. Irony? Nope its true. Peugeot, Renault, Citroen. Stay away from em. They got crappy flex parts which breaks all the time. Only good thing about french cars is they doesnt seem to rust much.

Regarding Vauxhall, I take it your english? I dunno about the english produced Vauxhalls, but the german version called Opel has got some SERIOUS issues with rust, stay clear of those.

Personally I'd go for a Ford or a Toyota if you want something cheap and something able to last a bit. VWs are really really nice, they are steady as hell. However some of the bearings are a bit weak, and if you cant fix that yourself, that will cost you a bit. However I reckon that will be a good investment.

Hope it helps!

if your on your oown insurance id stay away from a 1.2+ laddley.

my 1.0 ax would have cost me 2800 when i tried to insure when i was 17.

It came down to 1100 in the first year when i went on my bros insurance who was 22. Renewing this time is now 660 :).

1.0litre cars ftw?

1.4 polo is pretty nippy

no self respecting man would drive a polo fgs :(

but if u really really must have one, theres a few nissan that isnt all bad i guess... mitsubishi got a few also that aint taking all day to get to where u wanna go...

but no matter what car u choose to get, i really wouldent get one from Ebay. look on the dedicated sites insted. alot less chance to get f*cked over there. oh and if u dont know a whole lot about cars, bring someone that does.

and when u find a car, find a site/forum that deals with said car brand and ask for things to look out for before u buy it.

oh, and never ever pay the asking price. thats bound to be higher then the car is really worth.

most of this is probably obvious but it never hurts to mention them ;)

but stay away from Ebay please :)

P.S: is anyone else getting freaked out stuff on the forum since the downtime?

My first car was a 1.25 fiesta LX in Black drove that for 1 year then upgraded to 1.6 focus. Both are excelent cars but i have to say Dovercourt ford are starting to piss me off they told me my bonet was broke so i had to pay to fix it yet they still managed to do a MOT when the bonnet did not open???? is that possible?

Then they said my breaks were gone and i need 4 new disks and pads, to which i had to say i have rear drum breaks so try again :(

So what im saying Ford cars are great but the dealership i got mine from are wankers.
