So I find myself in a strange situation this year.
Let me take you back to the summer of 2006, I meet this girl, shes hot, smart and only 17 . So we start dating and everything is going well until I get sent to the Falkland Islands for 4 months. Before I go I ask if she will wait for me, she says she will but after 1 month she stops answering the phone, replying to emails and letters and generally ignores me. Bit of a sob story but you get the idea. On my return to the UK she finally speaks to me again but doesnt explain what happened.

Back to the present and after leaving the RAF, some bad dating experiences, an all too familiar dry spell and sporadic text conversations with my ex followed by long months of silence, she contacts me via msn to say hello. So we get to talking about work and ambitions and stuff, and she tells me she wants to move to America to work for the ambulance service in New York, but doesnt know where to start. So jokingly I suggest she goes to New York to find out what she would need to do to get the ball rolling. So now in 16 days time I'm going to be in New York with my ex girlfriend for 5 days. And how we got to this point I'm still not sure, it feels like I was reverse mugged or something.

Question is, in this global economic downturn what are her chances of getting work there? She has NHS nursing experience but no qualifications as she had to drop out of uni due to stress.

Another question is how can I look cool and NYC streetwise enough to charm her into bed with me

In answer to question 1, what does she mean, "work for the ambulance service"? If she wants to be a paramedic, she'd have to train for it just like here, and tbh, if she dropped out of nursing because of stress, why would it be any easier in a whole new environment? If she wants a less frontline job, first question is, does she have a green card or any right to work in the US? If not, she hasn't got a prayer of getting a public sector job in the US. If she'd qualified in the UK, then yes, she'd have a shot, but she'd still have to do some retraining (I know a doctor and an opthalmatist who had to do that), but without the qualifications...sorry, doubt it.

Answer to your second question, just by landing in the US, you are immediately in an environment with 350 million people who are less cool than you are, so job done

it really depends on how many open spots there are. and education usually means very little in another country as they usually have different standards.

so she may just as well be forced to so it all over again.

and about the sex, just ask her if she'd be interested. if she is, she is, if not well then you know and wont have to go through all the work.

TBH I think Big G's assesment is almost correct, she has always been a bit of a dreamer, but like me at her age seems to enjoy the dreaming more than the actual doing. At least by doing this shes actively trying to takes the steps she needs and she'll have me there to guide her. Then later on she can guide me to the spot teedles swaffled and then me and teedles will have that connection I've always wanted 8===D

The Reasoning:

If someone wants to do something they do it. Everything else is obfuscation. Look at someone's actions, ignore their words. Words are driven by agenda. Behaviour if observed correctly is the true key to agendas and will tell you where you really stand.

If she wants to be with you, she'll play her part in making it happen. Anything else is stringing you along to meet her own goals. Unwittingly you may be colluding in this if you don't think much of yourself.

In terms of the sex, your choice mate.
In terms of the job. My fiancee, a NHS nurse in the UK, reliably informs me that any medical or nursing qualifications obtained in the UK mean absolutely nothing in the US, noth or south. Canada and most other places on this earth including Oz and NZ will recognise and actively recruit UK qualifications, whereas, in the US, you have to take an exam for whichever state you want to work in, and these exams are HARD. And once you've qualified in one state, you're only qualified in that state, you have to take another exam for every other state you might want to work in. TBH, like others have said, if she has previously dropped out of uni due to stress, she's got no chance of managing in the states, where you've got mega amounts of gun shot wounds, stabbings and other delightful stuff like that.

Put the past behind you. If you were really taking the trip to New York for New York, you wouldn't have mentioned shagging her so much.

It sounds like you're setting yourself up for a fall and allowing yourself to be played (whether or not she is doing so intentionally is another case, and one we'll never know on these boards).

Only mentioned the shagging because I'm eager to end this nasty dry spell. Thanks for the concern but I'm not being played, too paranoid for that, told her from the start she pays for everything herself coz I can't afford to carry us both. It was the first thing that I thought when this whole idea came about, so no worries there.

As others have said, working in the USA is a pain in the butt, unless you have worked for a UK sister / subsidary for more than a year and do an internal transfer.

Any other way and you have to wait years to get a green card, or enter various forms of lotteries.

As for actual paramedic training, the way it works here, or so my local friends say, is that you enroll in a full or part time College (read: university) degree, and do the basic training, and then when that is done, you do the actual paramedic certification, also done through a College, then you have to do some other certificatons too, they couldn't specify. All in all the processess can take up to 3 years from begining to end,longer if you do the Bachelor degree. And you must have a valid US driving license.

If it's something she really wants to do, she should do the paramedic training in the UK, move to Canada, and then look for an opertunity to bridge across without re-doing all the basics. It will be much cheaper, and if she drops out, she wont have wasted megabucks enrolling in College in the USA.

Finally, the paramedic pay is the highest in New York state compared other US states - this means the competition is much higher for places, just something to be aware off.
