i drive a P reg 1.4 polo. for a while its been stalling when i goto shift to a lower gear. at first it was a minor annoyance as it only happend rarely. these days, lowering gear creates a 80% chance the car will stall. even going down hill or travelling at 50 mph it will stall. obviously this quite dangerous especially on roundabouts or junctions. sometimes im lucky and if i can get the clutch up quick enough it starts going again. othertimes i need to turn the key.
this doesnt just happen to me, its everyone who drives the car. so its not my driving thats the problem :p

battery has been changed. oil is fine.

anyone have a clue wtf the problem is?

change the tick over, theres normally a little twisty thing near where the accelorator cable is under your bonnet.

if the tickover is set too low then the car will stall. It happened to me with my old car.

Does the battery light flicker at all? I mean really faintly.

If so its the alternator and if not I would say its that from how you have described things.

Babs also drives a Polo and hes a giant homo, not sure if that fixes your problem but it may help.

Diamond :D

(It would be a japanese polo though. Or at the very least it would have a giant transfer of a japanse man-cartoon who looks like a woman doing something homosexually acrobatic).

Stalling when the engine revs fall between gears, or stalling just because its in a lower gear?

it stalls going from a high gear to a lower gear.

5th -> 4th

2nd ->1st

etc

also it will stall when coming to a halt but the gear may not have been shifted down. i can say for certain it doesnt do it when i shift up.

I am sure babs had the same problem you know.

His was fixed with TremAdvice laced with abuse and piss taking.

His was his alternator.

I just gotta havva bash at this :) . Now then you mention oil and a few other things - idling speed. Well you have to consider how an engine works. It needs fuel and a spark as well as correct timing to run correctly (first part of lesson on motor mechanics). Also it has to breathe correctly. It isn't any good altering the idling speed if all you are doing is compensating for another underlying fault. Go get it tuned and make sure the sparky plugs are checked, cleaned and adjusted. Also the air filter replaced should it be needed. Timing checked as well. If the tuner stretches to having compression pressures checked then take him up on that too. Poor compression indicates bad rings or - more likely in your case - poor seating of valves. If the idling speed is still playing up yet everything else is okie dokie then is the time to adjust it. If this fails then idling probs can be caused by fuel blockages so a mechanic needs to delve deeper into the innards.

Thus endith the whole idling problem lesson as given by Thugs *bows*.

It won't have a tick over screw if its got fuel injection.

Has it got fuel injection -tris?

I had a similar problem with my first car, A VW Scirocco, it turned out the Carburetor was full of shit and it needed a good cleaning.

This is most likley of no help what so ever though.

Engines only require a spark if they're petrol. Since the engine appears to function perfectly well under load, you can assume that the fuel & air mix is working fine. The spark plugs should be ok, cleaning them is only really necessary if theres carbon buildup down the side of the body (leading to a short circuit).

Compression testing is easy, just let the engine idle and remove the oil filler cap. Put a piece of A4 paper over the opening. Blowby is fairly obvious if the paper gets blown away from the opening.

I'm no expert but I wouldn't have said the idle speed is the issue here. If the car idles fine at all times other than gearchanges, then the idle speed is ok. There may be an idle control valve, and that might need attention. There may well also be an airleak on the engine air intake.

Does it ever misfire?

I presume it has a carburetor? Buy some carb cleaning spray and give it a bit of a squirt. Its probably not that, but it doesn't hurt anyway.

Also, when was the fuel filter last changed? Does the car feel 'down' on power at all?

Also, inside the carb will be a throttle plate. Its this that you might want to clean.

Its well worth removing the carb completely, stripping it down, and clearing it out.

I did this to my intake manifold on my car last week, to remove 176,000 miles of soot and oil vapour, also cleaning an exhaust gas recirculation valve in the process. The difference in behaviour of the engine is remarkable for it. Before I did this, it would be slow to accelerate when cold, grumbly idle when cold, and the gear changes (automatic) were harsh when cold. Now its like a new car, and all because I degreased a valve and an aluminium manifold :)

It won't have a carb if it's P reg.

My flippant diagnoses would include, poorly pussy,or knackered MAP Sensor / Air Mass Meter / IACV.

Honestly though, you'd need to see the car to establish anything.

Turning up an idle screw is masking a symptom, not fixing the cause.

Gumbo used to work for a large garage chain, spent some time in retail for the motor trade, and then at a motor factors up until the beginning of October this year. He has a little over 12 years in the motor trade.

He's now running a boatyard.

Polos suffer from carbuerettor wear. Turn up the idle may help, or get a recon carb prolly if thats what it is.

We already know what the cure for aids is, it involves a goat, bodhi, a large giraffe and a tub of vaseline.

Is the car underpowered? (ie do you need a hill and 3rd gear to get to 60?)
