if anyone remembers the last exciting installment, heres an update.

went in for the MOT and needed the rear breaks and some suspension brush or something replacing to make it street legal. seemed to cost an arm an a leg mind.

the revs dont seem to drop as low as previously so im unsure if hes done something to it but it still does stall. im not sure how thats legal but there you go. im assuming he could find no problem in that area that warrants a fixing to stop it happening.

so am i stuck with something thats just one of those things or was the guy an idiot? my dad has a mate looking at it soon but if that turns out negative im unsure wtf to do :/

Well to my understanding, MoT's have nothing to do with whether your car will run or not i.e. if it stalls when you change down, just that its 'road legal' i.e. you don't have Bald tyres, your windscreen wipers work etc..

Take it to a garage and tell them it stalls.. whenever, ask them to take it for a spin, they'll fix it then.

Do you have the hayes manual for it? If you don't and it's a (94-99 model) (M - S reg) which IIRC it is then i'll flip through mine to see if theres a mention of the solution.

As has been said, the MOT test is not about how well your car runs, having an engine that stalls doesn't make it illegal. The MOT covers a number of points that have been checked, for a set fee. They may then fix any issue that is required for the car to pass, at your expense of course. In terms of the engine the MOT is far more about whether it's about to fall out of the engine bay than if it works.

Having said that if it is better than before it is possible that they may have changed something. One part of the MOT is to check emissions for which the engine is running. If they were unable to keep the engine running then they may have tweaked the timing, but if you'd not asked them to diagnose and rectify this as a known fault then they wouldn't have, and if they have tweaked it to keep the engine running they are in no way liable to have done more than the bare minimum. My guess is that they probably haven't changed anything and any improvement is just your imagination.
