Everyone will probably scoff at this, but the citreon c4 is a nice drive too and you do get quite a lot for your money - the trim level/quality is terrible though.

I don't suggest Golfs any more. Based on my current wheels I would suggest she buys a BMW 118i/d. They are cracking little cars, easily the best to drive of the shopping trolleys. More room than people will give them credit for inside, and they are pretty reliable.

Certainly far more interesting than the automotive beige that has been discussed so far.

I'd have loved to get a 118 d Bodhi, but they are at the bloody expensive price range of hatchbacks, along with the Mini's that are the same car.

Er, the 1-Series isn;t the same car as a Mini is any way shape or form. The 1-Series is based on a shortened 3-series platform, hence is rear wheel drive. The MINIs are wrong wheel drive.

P.S I spent £1500 on the below. It's probably cost me an extra grand to do a few small jobs on it, but apart from the odd bit of rust (it is an E36 at the end of the day) it is mint. Goes like a scalded cock as well...

I had a 120i sport for three years, absolutely loved it; a dream to drive. Also got a spin in my mates 123d M-sport which was awesome for a diesel, but the M-sport suspension was a bit bouncy.

I've got a new Ford Focus estate 1.6TDCi from work recently and recommend it for a number of reasons. Put aside the fact it's an estate, it applies to the hatchback as well.

1.6 diesel engine is a bit weak for power, but incredible for economy and emissions. The emissions (115g/km) means that the tax disc is something stupid like £30 per year. The economy is also ridiculously good and I get 60-64mpg without really trying. If I put the effort into it, I get 68-70mpg.

I've only got the Style trim but it's well put together and comfortable for long drives (I sometimes do 6-7 hours driving a day). The ICE isn't much to write home about but gives decent sound quality but the aircon is spot-on! It chills quickly in warm weather and warms quickly in cold weather.

It isn't a *brilliant* car, but it ticks all the boxes to be a *competent* car.
