Guys.

Any advice for a tone deaf old guy?

Looking for a piece of software that will allow me to edit a track (such as cutting out pieces of "unwanted" music)

Also, if possible, would like to strip out the lyrics and leave only the instrumental.

Any such things out there ?

Not sure about the stripping lyrics out bit but Cubase is pretty fucking good, also Adobes 'Audition' program seems to work quite well.

I didn't know Cool Edit was now Audition, but now I do I can heartily recommend Audition (unless Adobe screwed it up like Symantec did with ATGuard...).

Wavelab and Goldwave will do what you ask.

As for lifting vocals off a track you are living in a dream world. It is just not going to happen, even if you are elite music producer man with lots of tech. The only way of doing so effectively is to have the original layers of track, so you can recompile it without the vocal layer.

Only if you're too retarded to use it properly. concord Dawn made Morning Light with it. I don't think I need to say any more.

And mucking about with centerchannels in Adobe Audition can give you a... well not great but decent removal or extraction of vocals. Nowhere near what you'd want though.

I use Sony Soundforge, quite decent but I don't play around with the settings that much, so no idea if it does what you want.

can recommend audition, but the best vocal removal tools out there are directx plugin based.

and ppl flaming fruityloops, ive been using it for 5 years and also do all my work on it. it's a matter of taste, but also how you use it. since the VST support came along, it really rocks

cubase is (in my opinion) the best audio software. i have a full pro-tools setup on my carillon pc up at the bands rehersal space, maybe i'm just too familiar with cubase but i found pro-tools a tad restrictive and awkward, dont get me wrong its good software but cubase just does so much more with less effort for recording and editing.
