Mum's the word!

My dad's suggested getting my mum a laptop for christmas and I was wondering if those in the know here can offer some suggestions?

There's no strict budget as such but the cheaper/vfm the better.

She'll only really be using it to check her emails and write letters but my dad insists on using AOL so it's got to be powerful enough to cope with that piece of bloatware and future versions.

Erm, wireless is a must, CD/DVD Burning would be nice. I'm not even sure whether portability is an issue either as I don't think there'll be any occasions where she'd take it out of the house without being able to transport it in a car or similar.

Also my brother in-law has said he can get some sort of educational discount so if possible I'd like a company that will do that.

Take a butchers at evesham laptops. They've been getting really good reviews recently.

I can only recommend IBM Thinkpads, they are a bit more expensive but they have excellent build quality.

The R40e and R50e series are a good price, the last R50e model I got had a built-in Wireless, and it was a good performing one too.

You may want to add another 512Mb ram tho, but that's only about £40 extra.

Take a look at Apple's iBooks. I guess your mum won't be wanting bleding edge gaming performance, so it might fit the bill nicely.

Consider all that time you won't spend ridding it of viruses and spyware. The wireless is absoutely magnificent on the Mac as well.

I'm not familiar with Macs at all tbh so I might have more problems than getting a mac solves. Do they even run AOL?

I got my sister one that did everything she needs, dvd rewriter, wireless. Nice 15" screen. Only cost me £400. We do one at work now for £500 which is pretty nice, and is 15.4" widescreen. Brand may be a bit dubious, but I bought oe for my aunt and it seems solid enough.
