Indeed, I still understand the issues some people have with XP against 2k... anyway, that's been done before.

Firstly, if it was an upgrade install then reinstalling using "full" is your friend. It might just be a case of needing a clear out I'm afraid.

Easiest way to stop the pop is

Control panel/Administrative tools/services

scroll down to messenger and disable it

(this is nothing to do with microsoft messenger which should still work if not enable it again)

Clearly you didn't disable it then, come on, this isn't rocket science.

I did do it properly, In fact I did it weeks ago and like I said, it has succesfully stoped I.E popups but not messenger ones.

I did do a screen dump, but am not allowed to attach it, so cant show you.

All the popups seem to be from a bendy girl called Kate :D

it shouldnt have anthing to do with i.e pop ups, disabling messenger disables netsend on your pc which is what the spammers are using.

obviously disabling it means you cant use netsend yourself but then i dont think i know anyone that has ever used it.

Of course its not, thats the whole point. Stuff like this is designed to prevent people that shouldn't even try from getting anywhere near rocket science.

But disabling the netsend services has nothing to do with MSN messenger. Which is what the spammers are using, unless this thread has taken a cunning and well hidden turn.

can't help with the MSN messenger spam issue since I don't use IM... but if you feel that adaware is not catching everything, I like to run Spybot Search & Destroy as well, http://security.kolla.de/

To get a grip on, and to check what runs at start up, this control panel cpl provides a handy GUI to all those places that stuff starts from. http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml
I also use the Startup monitor from the same site, which get's your approval before allowing anything to put it's self in as autostarting.

and you are using a personal firewall right? http://www.zonelabs.com

Though you've disables the windows messenger service, if at some point you've done windows update then MS are not above turning back on services if they feel like it, so do check that it is still disabled!

I thought this thread was about MSN spam, but then started reading bits about windows messenger spam...............buh, my head hurts.

If its messenger spam, then Stop messenger spam seems to work rather well.
