MSN and the attack of the spamming whores

I know, I know, MSN kill babies and eat souls, but I use Windows Messenger because all my friends do, and it makes reassuring blingey noises when I get new e-mail, but recently my windows messenger has been over run with junk mail sluts.

Hi, my names Jennifer, see me on my webcam!

I block them every single time, but they come back again and again and its making me murderous. I simply cant find a way to block them from messaging me, and there has to be a way. Doesn't there? Someone? Anyone?

I've been told that with a new update you can stop people from messaging you, but i updated and that never appeared, and shnarf and rage.

I'm not a dog, I'm an evil pac man, just check the website.

It will have the following limitations though just before you get weepy when stuff don't work in the future.

Nobody you've not added can message you - i.e. if your friends are muppets that change there accounts every 5 minutes like some of mine, they will soon become very annoying friends.

You won't recieve any of those links I send you in my many thousands disguises to watch jenifers webcam broadcasts...... oh shite

(p.s. I still don't believe Trebz has a mother)

There's a charming young whore called Kate, who insists on asking me to join her in some goddamn weirdness. I hope she'll no longer bother me, though unfortunately my email address is prone to random twats. Also, why is it so goddamn often that "some spastic can't be added to your block list" - Why the goddamn hell not?! Stupid arabs.

(goddamn!)

From memory I don't think you can block people who are offline that aren't on your contact list or some crap, they have to have been added then destroyed iirc

I've never had any to MSN. PArtially - I expect - because it is set up so that everyone has to be auth'd to message me, and also cause I don't have a spam-magnet hotmail address as my passport sign-in.

Ok, a new problem (my PC is filthy with all sorts of unwanted guests) - Morpheus pop ups, and little radars and horrors.

Quite frequently I get a big (and I'm talking big enough to nearly chew up a quarter of my monitor) pop-up just dive out of my task bar advertising morpheus. As soon as I visit a site like ebay in my task bar a little Morpheus shopping club status meter pops up (which looks like a green glowing satellite dish/radar) and suddenly I get linked back to the homepage of ebay when I click on a product, which makes me suspicious that this little icon is being deliberately evil and stopping me shopping, though it could just be coincedence. Having clicked on the icon, it says:

Do you wish to automatically collect cashback?

Yes No

How do you wish to be notified when earning cashback?

Notify me via a sliding message window Notify me via a flashing tray icon

EXAMPLES:

If you have chosen yes, this message window will slide onto your screen notifying you that cash back is being generated while you shop

If you have chosen no, his message window will slide onto your screen presenting you the option to earn cash back while you shop

(This is also called the If You Tick No We're Going To Harrass You Anyway option...)

I had Morpheus installed eons and eons ago, but I uninstalled it (or as best as I could) but it seems some nugget of evil may remain. I've adaware'd with the latest updates, I've nortoned, and this will not leave my PC alone.

Someone, kill it?

It sounds like something GAIN would do, but ad-aware zaps that quite easily.

What I'd do is have a look through the processes list in task man, and see if there's anything out of the ordinary. Try shutting things down and seeing if anything changes. Other than that, no idea :\

That's the crux of it really. Create a new MS Passport using your "normal" (ie non-hotmail, non-spam magnet) account. Then copy over all your contacts, and send them a message saying you've changed. It'll take a few minutes, but you'll get zero spam messages after that.

Re: Morpheus. You've almost certainly got some other shite installed on there that does ad-sharing (like nath said, GAIN is a culprit, I think Gator do similar shite). If ad-aware doesn't pick it up though (and it's coming out of your taskbar??), it sounds pretty deeply embedded and trojan-like. I take it you're using 2K or XP? Do a clean reboot, then check your process list - kill anything that doesn't look friendly. If that doesn't work, take off and nuke the site from orbit - it's the only way to be sure.

You could always try the free trial of Pest Patrol. Dont forget to run the update thing once its installed (if you install it of course) before you scan.

Ok, Pest Control didn't find it, though I must say I like the suitably dramatic noises it makes while scanning :) That did appeal to me. It found one gator thing, which has now been nuked, and this blighter still exists.

I'm running XP, and I'm afraid I'm not too sure how to check my process list, but yes it emerges from my task bar and nestles in my system tray, and it automatically spawns when I go to ebay.com (but not co.uk) and no doubt quite a few other sites.

Hateful.

I guess it's time for a proper spring clean.

CTRL-ALT-DEL

Task Manager

Processes

Definitely sounds like some ad-sharing thing if it's activating itself when you visit certain urls. Try using a different browser (Opera) and see if it happens.

Heh, the latest development is my computer randomly making "BOIT!" noises, like Rolf Harris and his bit of cardboard are trapped inside.

Its a complete wipe out at the weekend for my PC.

I made sure she was using the latest version/updates to Adaware and I also ran Windows Washer and that's not fixed it. I killed some processes via task manager and that sill didn't stop it. I reset her windows sound back to the default scheme and that didn't fix it. It's really odd.

But then the XP she's using now was upgraded from a ME install....

2k is like a volvo. It maybe well built and safe but it's certainly not very sexy. It's just boxy.
