Well i got my watch for my timings i was talking about today and went out this morning at 6am for my first run.












Fuck it hurt.

Haha, the first run of training, happy days :)

How far did you go? How did you find it?

I always find that I get so far then either my legs or my lungs start aching, I rarely feel both of them at the same time, normally its one or the other, whichever one is worse tends to dictate the performance for that session :)

Good stuff getting up early for a run, just keep at it and you'll get there :)

running is too much like hard work. the furthest ive managed is about a mile in 15-20 minutes

The missus makes me run with her with I'm in Bangkok - Although i don't mind it, I tend to spill far too much beer than normal.

Hahah, classic :D

Yeah, the first runs are the worst, but it does get easier. Currently in Colorado with work, staying in a place called Loveland that's 5000ft up. It's like being a newbie again, I just can't breathe!

I am so unfit it is untrue. I am basically this week doing 5 minute walk followed by 60 seconds running and then 90 seconds walking for 20 mins and then walking home.

I actually don't feel as bad as i thought i would.

Next run is Thursday and then Saturday. Then it is two days off and next week is a 90 sec walk 90 sec run combo for 20 mins.

tbh now you've started, if you feel anything at all amiss with your legs, get ye to a sports doc. _please_ remember to warm up and cool down. even if you're going to run for like, a minute. enjoy responsibly and all that.

good stuff. gradually you can work to 20 seconds sprinting and 1.5 mins walking. high intensity interval training is the best for cardio fitness.

I was told the 5 minute brisk walk at the start and at the end were fine to warm down? Should i being doing stretches? I have a little soreness at the top left of my knee. think that is more down to impact though i do weigh a fair bit.

try running on grass to reduce impact.

stretching at the end is key, esp to reduce the stiffness.

Yeah some Reebock DMAX things. Really comfy except i wore trainer socks and they have rubbed the back of my ankles raw. Its going to be painful tomorrow!

Second one was this morning.

Was sooooo much easier. Still struggled a bit towards the end but no real ill effects today.

Running is a very hard discipline to master, especially in the beginning. It also teaches you in no uncertain terms that in some aspects of life you just can't cheat as you only get out of it what you put into it. It builds your character and teaches you resolve, dedication and also patience.

I am a pretty hard core runner averaging around 60-65 miles a week now. Just returned from a run in fact of about 7 miles which included 4-5 miles of short sprints with pyramid rests. Went like this - 30 seconds flat out and then 90 seconds rest, repeat 30s flat out then a minute rest, once more flat out and just 30s rest and then back up the rests in reverse. Tonight I will go for a 6-7 mile easy run.

Stick with the training but don't over do it - listen to your body!

my knees, ankles, calves are fecking knackered with running / footie.

Dont have a problem on the bike yet (apart from the lungs failing me)

You want to be very careful at first when taking up running or when increasing mileage. The body takes a right hammering and you need to take a number of steps to lesson the load. For one thing body and joint impact. Pounding the roads results in excessive shock being transfered throughout your joints. To help reduce this you should do a number of things:

1. make sure you have good quality trainers which can lesson shocks
2. run off road and on grass or soft surfaces as often as possible
3. use shock absorbers such as sorbethane in your trainers
4. eat a balanced diet with plenty of fruit and veg, with some fish or nuts thrown in at times as these will help your body repair the damage to your cartilage etc.
5. make sure you get plenty of rest

Sounds like I am preaching but any runner needs to consider the above whether they are just starting or have been running for a long time. There are other considerations as well such as body weight. Obviously the lighter you are the less your joints suffer. Great sport but hell it is a very hard one too.

Day 3 done yesterday. Think i might need to repear week one. Still a bit of a struggle. Thanks for the advice Om, I have also taken up a healthy diet as well. I have lost half a stone this week!!!!!!!!!!!

Blimey - take it easy!

Here is something to aim at - my running schedule for last week!

Monday - club run of about 9 mile
Tuesday - 7 mile including 4x1min hard with 1 min recovery - 3 x 2 min hard with 2 min recovery - 4 x 1 min hard with 1 min recovery
Wednesday - club run of about 8 mile
Thursday - 2 runs with morning run of about 7 mile including 30s sprints with pyramid rests or 90s, 60s and 30s and back up - evening of about 6 mile easy
Friday - 6 mile
Saturday rest - thank god
Sunday about 14 mile pretty fast

Hey and I am 51yrs old!

You have to build up slowly though. There ain't any way to rush your body with regard to running high mileage and there are a lot of downs along the way but in my mind the good times out balance the bad times by miles. Nothing better than being super fit and running in countryside when the sun is shining strongly and yourself without a top on. You feel more animal than human! I just hope I can accumulate more memories of such times.

Don't be afraid to rest though! If you are knackered and aching then rest. You feel like that for a reason and it is because your body needs to repair itself.

Be interesting to see how long you last on this fitness regime ;).

50-odd miles is a pretty decent weekly milage, you a marathon runner? :)
