MP4 to MPEG converter

I'm trauling through download.com looking for a video converter and it's doing my head in, they're all free to try and so much to buy. I have nothing against buying one if I know it definately works but I can't test them in any of the free trial versions I've tried so far. Xilisof Video Convertor looks all right but I never heard of them, don't know for sure it will work and don't want to give them my bank details because I don't know who they are.

Anyway, that's a kind of long-winded way of asking if anyone knows of a good MP4 to MPEG/AVI/WMV etc converter, a free one would be good but I don't mind paying a bit?

VirtualDub, with AVISynth and a simple .avs file that looks like so:

directshowsource("C:\video.mp4")

Provided you can already view the mp4 file on your pc, then all you need to do is save the avs file, load it in virtualdub, and save it as an AVI using your favorite encoder (DivX/XviD etc....)
