Well hello, thread.

I'm liking the place. It seems to do 'big city' and 'little city' at the same time, which is pretty cool.
I still haven't really connected with anyone or figured out what to do most of the time, though. As MrHorus implies, most stuff centers around drinking/eating which I can't do anyway, so whatever. And the fact that I'm ~4 years older than most people on my course sucks a bit more than I expected it would.

But yeah. Apart from the fact that I still pretty much spend my life on my computer, it's pretty good up here. Yep.

How can you not eat and drink?

Do you not have a mouth? :D

What course anyway?
And aye, gotta be a bit gay being older likes - my flatmate is doing medicine and he repeated a few years, so he is a couple years older than everyone else in his year.

As I've said, I have coeliacs - gluten intolerance - so I can't eat or drink out. I have to pretty much do all my own cooking and stuff, and given that most social shit focuses on food/drink it rather limits what I can do.

Edit - oh, coursewise I'm doing a pure math degree with a little informatics on the side.

Nah, going to Uni when you're a bit older is brilliant; its like being a teenager twice. I went when I was 23 and I don't regret going a bit later at all; it was easier to pull, you tend to be able to look after yourself a bit better than the average teenager, and tbh I think you're a bit more motivated; older people tend to have actually thought about why they're there rather than just going because everyone else has or their parents expected them to.

I was sick for years so I never got to 'be' a teenager in the first place. My main annoyance is that I find that I don't identify with anyone I meet. The fact that I dont/can't drink means that 90% of the average student's social life isn't for me. And the computer games society here is full of jerks. (Who would've thought!)

I've got a mate with that condition (sounds like the same symptoms anyway, plus it gives him a fairly serious skin condition where he has to slather gunk on himself every few hours). He can't drink beer or wine but he's OK with certain spirits, like bacardi. Looking back through the thread, its difficult to know what to suggest about socialising; I think you have to give it time, but don't be closed to going to pub/club even if you can't have a drink. I know its very easy to give advice about this kind of stuff when I know jack about you, but its a truism that you won't meet people sat at home (other than all the wierdos on here of course :))

You forget that a large percentage of students in Edinburgh (and I hope this doesnt include you...) are Oxbridge rejects who are entirely subsidesed by mummy and daddy and as such, are completely up their own arses what with being away from home for the first time and having lots of their parents money to spend.

My flatmate for example comes from a similar less-than-wealthy background than myself and is doing medicine at Edinburgh. He knows of folk that lived in the new development at Pollock where the rent is about £550pcm and it was entirely paid by their parents. I was even more shocked to hear that some of these people don't have ANY debt at all, even in their 3rd year of a medical degree.

Britain as a classless society?
Yeah right.

So if you are not a drinker or an eater, what *DO* you do?
There are quite a few "arthouse" type cinemas if that's your thing - check out the Filmhouse and the Cameo on Lothian Road if you want some decent foreign films that the big chains won't get. I mind when I started uni I went to see Battle Royale at the Cameo and I was dead impressed that you could actually bring your beer into the audiotorium from the bar :D

Yeah seriously. This is what pisses me off, also. The fact that the worst off are forced to get part time jobs (thankfully I'm not that badly off just yet, though come the third year...) if they want to study, and hence will do worse on their degree just plain sucks. (Assuming it's a proper degree with the workload that goes with it, of course.)

Exactly. :(

I have been meaning to go to one of those cinemas at some point actually. Just haven't met anyone who'd be interested in that sortof thing, and am a bit reluctant to go by myself (though I will probably wind up doing so eventually.)

come to the Edinburgh Freddybeer then Louster. I'll get you a pint of whatever you're ok with drinking with regard to the gluten and you get to meet Will and MrH, both local to you. Who knows, you may end up going to the cinema yet :)

The truest statement ever spoken on FH.

Being an (almost) native Edinburgh dweller / former student, I was amazed at the number of English people at uni here ... almost all never quite made it into Oxford/Cambridge and came to Edinburgh instead.

As for places to go, Le Monde on George Street - uber trendy if you like that sort of thing.

Number of English people in general mate.

Now I have nothing against my south-of-the-border chums (apart from BBC Sporting bias...) but Edinburgh is probably the most anglicised city outside of England when you compare the amount of English people to the amount of natives.

I don't really give a fuck and I don't really notice it amongst all the aussies and kiwis but when you are walking around or doing something and you realise just how few Scottish voices you hear, well it's kinda disconcerting at times.

And yeah Louster, come to the pub and help us rip the piss out of TdC and his foreign, european ways!
