Windows Moviemaker is a nice free one, comes with windows, altho quite basic.
Virtualdub is free, but only really good for cutting bits of clips out etc, and encoding. I found it was handy for increasing the brightness etc for the dark scenes so you can actualy see whats going on, altho it looks weird with 1 high brightness one and rest normal, so try to keep it all normalized throughout.
Adobe Premier is wicked for editing, if you can get hold of it.
