I am in fucking agony I have not had a wet shave in over a year I just trim it weekly (and look like a hobo) but with Movember and a Wedding Saturday (Nan has told me my arse will get kicked if i don't show up clean shaven!) I have just shaved and

I have a full beard so a bit pointless. I was going to just let it grow but it was close to an inch long and I had had enough of it.

I've commented before about the problems I have with irritation and shaving. I have a skin condition around my chin that makes it uncomfortable to shave every day. It's also a problem if I leave my beard to grow out because the itchiness kicks off the irritation as well. Damned if I do, damned if I don't.

If your face hurts or your skin is red raw after shaving then you're doing it wrong. The usual problems are a) that you're pressing too hard with the razor, b) haven't softened your whiskers, c) rushing it.
You don't need to take a lot of extra time, but just wetting your face, slapping on some gel/mousse/foam and going for it will end up badly. Take a little time to make sure your whiskers are thoroughly wet and softened and it makes shaving much easier. You suffer less tugging and less skin irritation.

Many people think that pressing harder with the razor will get a closer shave. All it does is scrape at your skin and cause razor burn. You just need to make lots of gentle small strokes, rinsing the razor out often.
