I recently reinstalled windows xp pro on my computer, with sp2 etc. However now whenever I try to open any .mov file in any media player, the program crashes with the usual xxxxx has encounterred a problem and needs to close, even my file converters suffer from the same problem. Initially i thought it might be a codec issue, but after having downloaded about 100meg of different codec packs i'm out of ideas.

players tried: WMP 10, Real player 10, zoom player, divx player, wmp classic, quick time. Converters tried; cucusoft converter and divx converter, both of which crash in the same way... it's as if all the mov files are satan, as other file types play fine in all the players

Pre thanks for any help :)

it doesnt matter wich player you use to play the mov files - your computer still doesnt know how to decode the images in the file - you need a special codec for that. .mov is usually apple quicktime (shit format tbh) so you need to download either apple quicktime or quicktime alternative - i recommend the last.

And for media player i recommend media player classic

k-lite.. :)

I suggest you dont use codec packs - they usually just install alot of crap that you dont need.

For all my decoding needs i use this:
ffdshow (decodes almost every video, unless its reaplayer media, quicktime or windoes media shit) (http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow )
AC3 filter (if the sound in your video is not mp3, then its AC3) ( http://ac3filter.sourceforge.net/#download )
Quicktime alternative (http://www.free-codecs.com/download/QuickTime_Alternative.htm)
Real alternative ( http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Real_Alternative.htm )
Free DVD codec ( http://www.freewindows.dk/fw/modules/mydownloads/singlefile.php?lid=339)

And of cource media player classic to play dvd's and other clips ( http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=82303&package_id=84358)
