aye, you'll need to raise your budget to get something half decent

Under £100 you could get this:

tbh for what you say you want to be doing with it, I'd try and find a nice second hand rigid singlespeed. that means one gear and no bouncy stuff. arguments: low maintenance, less stuff to break, will get you fit fastest and will prolly be best bang for your buck at that level. not to mention the fact that rigid singlespeeds are the pinnacle of coolness.

You want to make sure that the gearing is more towards road use by the sounds of it. Any newcomer to bikes thinks that the top gears are more than enough for some decent speeds on the road. Trouble is within a short time you become a hell of a lot fitter and in a lot of cases you will find the gearing is too low on a mountain bike. Pain the arse that because it means more expense or a different bike. Ask some questions first about gearing or if larger cogs are available should you want to upgrade.

Skip rear suspension, it's worse then useless unless you do off-road stuff.
Whenever you pedal, the suspension will reduce the effect.
Also it's more things that can go to pieces (and more expensive)

Also for road use, avoid those big offroad tires at all cost. the aerodynamics is not present for those tires, and will slow you down alot.

And the fewer gears you need, the more sturdy it is, and easier to maintain.

Also get a good seat, and make really sure the frame is large enough for you.

there is that. go for a decent testride, eg 30 mins or more. if you're that tall you certainly want a bike that fits you properly, or you may fuck up your knees something chronic, not to mention other bits of you.

Think you mean grip and not Aerodynamics.

For road use you do not want off road tyres, grip is useless around corners in the wet. Could easily slide into traffic. Better getting road tyres, less bumpy and channels for water to flow in the wet. Any decent bike shop will have them in the right sizes.

As for gears, todays are easily adjustable and dont break easy, just stick with a good name like Shimano. Bound to be sales on in the bike shops so have a good look around.

I'd probably forget about rear suspension for 100quid, unless you're particular hardcore it's not really needed either. Might be able to find something on eBay half-decent for a 100 quid with just the front suspension. Also if you're riding off-road only occasionally, you'd probably want some slick or semi-slick tyres unless you like burning all your energy making the tyres hum, so might need to budget for them.

as you all failed me

you failed to purchase my bike :p

that bike looks almost what you wanted it to be. I'd advise dropping by your local Halfords and getting a test ride before you buy though.
