I think changing election law within six months of an election should probably be illegal. Same as last minute budgets filled with bribes. He wouldnt be changing the law if it didnt increase the chance of a labour win, so on principle we cant let him do it. Change it before the end of the first year in power IMO - makes it far more likely not to be a con.
I think its hilarious but are they really serious - sure they may not lose so badly but in the future they could never win as well again.
Did either of you actually bother to read anything past the headline?
The Independant said:Mr Brown today confirmed that he will campaign for a move to AV - under which voters rank candidates in numerical order, rather than simply placing an X on the ballot paper - in the referendum, which he said should be held by October 2011.
Also of notable
The Independant said:Confirming plans for a draft Bill for a "democratically accountable" House of Lords, Mr Brown said that "a modern democracy cannot tolerate power to initiate and revise legislation being held forever by those without a mandate for the people
This should have been done years and years ago.
The best part for me is this one...
Gordon Brown said:"It... offers voters increased choice with the chance to express preferences for as many of the candidates as they wish. It means that each elected MP will have the chance to be elected with much broader support from their constituency, not just those who picked them as their first choice," he said. "In short it offers a system where the British people can, if they so choose, be more confident that their MP truly represents them, while at the same time remaining directly accountable to them."
Which was exactly what i was banging on about earlier in the thread. Couldnt agree more with him and think that if this passes into law one day it will change the entire way that politics and politicians will be viewed.
