Most important discovery ever

You may have seen a bit of talk recently about the Usenet "significant posts" timeline that Google groups has put together. To see the Register's take, look here:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/6/23343.html

This evening, after a bit of ferreting about, I think I can confirm that I have dug up a first of a most monumental kind, namely:

THE FIRST TIME QUAKE WAS EVER MENTIONED ON THE INTERNET

The post I have found is this:
http://makeashorterlink.com/?J62725D3

As you can see, it seems to be someone in February 1994, who has just happened to finger John Romero's account at the right time, only to find a mysterious reference. Who knew what a life changing discovery they had just made?

Actually, there's some really interesting stuff in there. I might be some time...

/edit
Google has now added 20 years of Usenet history: the archive now stretches back to May 1981, a time when Northern Europe was still covered in ice, and our ancestors communicated with only the most primitive computers fashioned out of flint and bronze.

Made me chuckle, anyway. :)

Slightly less bored that you must be to reply to my post :)

Nevertheless, I still think that the first announcement of a genre shifting, culture shaping game is worthy of historic comment. We probably wouldn't be here flaming each other if it wasn't.

Genre-shifting? It was just Doom with prettier graphics and the ability to look up and down.

I'll go with Bodhi on this one, many games are overlooked simply because they were designed within the limits of the hardware of the day. When Doom came out we didn't even have "windows accelerator" graphics cards, but Quake launched when the first 3D chipsets hit the market.

And Doom was just Wolfenstein really :)

And Wolfenstein was just that 3D Maze Game ...

Don't take 'the ability to look up and down' as a small new feature. 'Twas the first fully 3d engine ever; the first one not to have restrictions other than size and entity count. And gameplay was totally different from Doom, don't be silly.

Yes, they changed the gameplay from "Shoot everything that moves, press the odd button, find keycard" to "Shoot everything that moves, press the odd button, find key".

Big change there!

lol, there are actually keycards in eXm1 though :)

I don't really consider the tasks provided in the stock levels to define the gameplay of the game, myself; more like the pace, variety, progression and atmosphere potential for custom mappers to use.

What a waste of a m00 gremlin. I insist you take that to the fps m00 thread.

Never played quake online myself (yes im a newbie), but without it I suppose I wouldnt have CS and BW wouldnt be about, or would but probably still hosting PA.
