The Bush administration has just defined an "illegal enemy combatant" as someone that "has engaged in hostilities or who has purposefully and materially supported hostilities against the United States" and considers itself having the right to "detain you without charges indefinitely, granting you no legal recourse except to a military tribunal, and, under the proposed bill, "disappear" and torture you".

Thats all it takes to end up at GITMO/Guantanamo etc. Fun times.

Now I am not a wacko conspiracy thoerist but 9/11 seemed to give the bush administration the perfect excuse to pass bills that go against the spirit of the Genva convention.

It's all getting a bit dodgey, America is definatly taking stpes towards the nanny state.

Don't you mean a Nazi State? Me and some friends at uni were discussing this bill earlier, and it is so imoral that its disgusting. Civilians can be picked up off the street for no reason, have confestions tourchered out of them, and these can be used to put them in fount of a millitary tribunial, which can then hand them down the death penalty.

This act makes the Patriot Act look like a joke, in one peice of legislation the US can compleately remove free speech from a country, and all in the name of protecting people, well who will protect them from their own govenment?

Benjamin Franklin: "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."

Code Name V: "People should not be affraid of their govenments, governments should be affraid of their people"

America is a pretty fucked up country anyway in a hundred and one ways, this is a just a natural progression for them on the road to self implosion.

Does bare resembalence to the Nazi party, and even George Orwell's 1984.

The only hope is that it's going so mad over there that even the Americans will notice and do something.

The similarity between Hitler's rise to power and the recent history of GW Bush is remarkable.

Consider this. Hitler was voted in to power as Chancellor by invoking the spectre of Communism. He convinced the German people that they were under threat of a Communist uprising. Shortly before the elections the Reichstag caught fire and a Dutch communist was blamed although proof was severely lacking. As a result, Hitler was able to pass two acts (the Reichstag Fire Decree and the Enabling Act) which allowed him to curtail people's civil liberties and ignore the normal processes of government if he wanted to. On a wave of public fear and paranoia, Hitler legally gained absolute power over Germany.

Now subsitute terrorism for communism, WTC for Reichstag, Reichstag Fire Decree for Patriot Act and Bush for Hitler....

If he wants to he can declare a state of emergency and suspend elections indefinitely. The various 'anti-terror' laws passed under his administration give him that power.
