Why was chalice good bye thread closed???

a well respected player most people know announces they leave on the hibernian boards and b4 we can even say goodbye and post our respects the thread has been closed for no reason. People are gonna start using the euro VN boards if this carrys on I think, and who can blame them.

Yes your a mod and you can close things, but please use judgement and discretion. Rather than adding value to these boards, lately you have been making them worse.

Can't help but agree there. There is NO reason Chalice's thread should be closed when other goodbye threads carry on for 4 pages at times.

Aye, that does happen.

Still, when considering why things are done on a msg board, ask yourself... What kind of person wants to be a mod? Who cares to have power over what others do or say?

Makes the actions taken a bit clearer as to why.

uhm or they just want to keep a forum fun and informative? So there would little flaming and spamming? Most mods arent people out for power, but want to keep a forum (or other medium they are moderating) fun.

and I doubt the mods have closed that thread :).

I've been a BW TFC admin for years now (not so much work lately though :-/ ) and the main reason I do it was to ensure I and ever every1 else has a good game without interuption by lamers. H8 that useless feeling u get on other public servers when some1 is causeing problems and u can't do nething about it :-/

The thread was closed by the thread starter, and this was stated in the second thread (which you supposedly read).

...but hey, why let the facts get in the way of a good whine?

Actually, this is a good opportunity to put a few things straight.

The mods aren't a bunch of power crazy control freaks. We don't get anything for moderating these boards (except abuse from the resident morons).

We do it for the community.... yes, it's that corny.

Imagine what an unmoderated board would be like? Perfect heaven for the more intellectually challenged members, but somewhere to be avoided for the rest of us.

Oh I forgot to mention how sensitive everyone seems to get when they read a post from a Mod.

Of course not everyone is a moron, though some days one would be forgiven for thinking otherwise.

I see your

and raise you

...and your point is?

I've been a member of BW for over 4 years, and I believe it's only right for me to contribute something in return. I know the concept of a community is laughable in DAoC, but I believe in it.

Let me repeat the same old song....

When you signed up for BW, you agreed to abide by certain rules. The moderators use these same rules as guidelines when perusing the boards. It's as simple as that.

We may not get it right every time, but hey, we're not as perfect as you lot.

Some people request to be a mod simply because they wish to help the community they enjoy so much, help BW/Game.net or believe they have sufficient experience, knowledge and the right attitude that they can contribute in this way and make a difference.

Personally I've been a Quake3 forum mod for a few years (iirc) and do it for two reasons:

1 To try to help people who ask for help
2 To support and give something back to the great community of Barrysworld (and now Game.net) that has given me such a great online gaming experience over many many years

If you can't appreciate that people do jobs like moderating for things other than self gain, then that's very sad and what some accuse mods of is more likely a failing of yourself, not the other way around.

Not at anyone in particular .... but generally the attitude to mods sometimes begins to grind you down!

To be honest guys,

If you have nothing to do other then abusing mods on forums then you really should find a hobby other then DaoC.

At the end of the day really what does it matter?
Waking up in the morning to jump onto BW for more insults is just childish and pathetic.

Then again perhaps im just being hypocritcal as technically this is a whine

you're the one being sensitive Cadire. you're a mod, people are always gonna moan at you for being a mod, suck it up and get on with things.

worse thing about the mods is that they give titles to all the weirdos from the off-topic forum (90% prydwen people)

Hhmmmm, these people have some serious issues that they need to deal with then.
Moan at people who are selflessly trying to make the place a better more enjoyable place for everyone and for nothing in return?

I'm extremely grateful that mods exist for each area of the forums and usually find them to offer good advice in a friendly manner. Take a look/post a thread in the hardware/software sections for example and you will usually get timely, reliable advice in a friendly manner. Maybe it's a side effect of these forums being in relation to a game that involves constantly striving to get another level/rank above the competition ....... making some people resent not having 'the power' when others do. I don't see this in many other of the forums.
Some people clearly have an entirely wrong impression of what mods are for and about.

Actually I don't know about the other mods, but I certainly don't have the rights to give custom titles. I got mine by blatant creeping to Damini

On evenings I like/get to wear a 'M' cape and lurk in the shadows outside hospitals, if that counts.

Custom titles just happen by people you get to know (and wish to ritualistically humiliate or just plain confuse), or by people that actively help out the community - for example, Cadire's came from helping out in the tech section of these forums, whilst Alrindel got his for being infinately patient and helping out with trouble shooting tips and advice during dreaded patch season...

And as for power... Oh, I love it! This morning I made some mere Phnargos residents carry me all the way to uni, and then they fed me grapes while telling me how beautiful and witty I was :)

And then they gave me money.

It was a good day.

Another example is Damini's real life other half who got this as a title:

Tried to get 1 over on DBs but failed so is now known as "Forum Buttplug"

I seem to of wandered into the DAoC forums, ok where is the door ;)

can i have an increadibly cool titel please? cause im kinda cool

or do i need to ask this in the off topic forum ?!??

It's nothing really to do with the off topic forum, it just happens that people tend to show more personality in the off topic forums so you get to know them better, rather than just talk about the latest raid or the what stats for what, or FFS OMG NOOB I HATE YOY SCUM etc...

Now every community has off topics, its easier to get to know people (if they actually post anything other than +1 or /pharm). Maybe we have too many custom titles, the general forum certainly doesnt have any where so many, and I don't have one, so I can't really have much sympathy for other people complaining :)

You can't decide your own custom title for the most part - its like giving yourself a nickname in rl (I had a friend when I was younger who tried to get us all to call him "Ace!" Erm, no.)
