Mobile Phones: Ringstones, Pictures and other misc. downloadable crap.

I got a new phone (Ericsson T68).

Naturally I now want to customise various bits of it, and with the noteworthy gold dust like shortage of SonyEricsson USB cables (and my lack of Bluetooth/IrDA) I'm in need of a source for such inner child shite.

Anyway, searching Google throws up plenty of sites offering ringtones and the like, however the fear of getting my mobile phone spammed with ad-messages and blanket phone calls is immense and I'm wondering if a reputable site exists that doesn't need to flog my phone number to stay in business?

Any recommendations?
(Or anyone sellling an T68 USB cable?)

I really hate the 'Mobile culture' that's sprung up over the last 4 years. So many people own and use mobiles, because they're "cool"; You can say that's just the children, however if you didn't own your mobile for the cool factor, why would you buy expensive ones, and drool over the latest models?

There are very few occasions when one would need a mobile, imo, allthough that could have something to do with me being a bit anti-social :( I think i've rang someone from my phone about twice, in nearly 3 years, taken about one important call, and actually took it out of the house a few dozen times. Don't carry a mobile for the sake of it, fs!

Shocko, not everyone here is in the bottom 5% of the nation when it comes to social life :/

I use my mobile mainly for SMSing; contacting friends while I'm at home or college, arranging to meet up in certain places on a night out... hell I even pulled using it a few days ago. The fancy features and 'cool' factor is just an added bonus - I doubt there are many who would buy a phone *just* to flash off...

Of course there are. People who pay in excess of £150 on a mobile phone are quite blatantly just doing it for the wow-bling-bling factor, as they rarely do anything of importance that lesser phones don't.

Colour display, Photo messaging, Picture messaging. Need I go on?

I semi agree, I use my mobile almost exclusively for work related stuff, I hardly ever call people on it, but get a fair few social calls on it. I hate texting people as my phone is battered and old, and my refusal to use 'Txt spk' means a message takes me about 5 minutes.

I've had my Nokia 3310 for just over a year now.

Use it often enough, not loads though. Mainly txt's to mates and organising piss-ups.

I despair thinking about society's communication skills twenty years from now. I value language, the plebs of tomorrow's youth evidently don't. At the risk of irony; nngh.

Text messages are one of the things i hate the most, or at least the way they're often used. Look at the latest vodaphone adverts... Text messages are a great way to replace flirting(and foreplay?), thinking what to put in your text messages is a great way to spend the time you should be working? Wtf, i know i can't speak about most things that i think are sad, however this is the most utterly shit and pathetic fad ever.

Yes, mobiles can serve a purpose, however there was nothing wrong with them 6 years or so ago, when the average idiot didn't have one. The same trends can be seen with things such as the internet(and to some extent computers in general) - The people at the top are so enthusiastic about new technoligy(can't spell that word, so shoot me), that they push it too much, to reach a high level of uptake, before people are ready for it. The problem is, the average pleb is a sheep, right down to the dodgy smell - He'll take whatever he's given, and sees everyone else taking.

I semi agreed with you before, now I totally disagree with you. Yes, I find mobiles annoying, however, if people wish to spend their time and money on them, why does it bother you?

Your elitism just confirms that stereotype of linux users believing they are superior. You have absolutely no right to look down on people for using a mobile, or for using the internet, or computers. Clearly people ARE ready for these things or they wouldn't use them.

You are disgustingly narrowminded.

Actually text messaging is very usefull, it was used for flirting way before the companies decided to use it as a selling point. If it wasnt for texts I wouldn't have been with my GF for the past 8 months. Your view is coming form someone who hates mobiles and doesn't see their use, probably because of a general lack of a life (not being rude, just how it seems). My life would be very dull without my mobile as a point of contact.

You wouldnt need a mobile if you didnt hang around on street corners in your mac! :D :p

edit: PS: Technology is always progressing and if you dont keep up to speed and make use of it you will be left behind in the world.

You will find the that the generation gap will increase due to the fact you are still living in the past!

My phone is used both for work and for my personal life.
It makes meeting up a more relaxed process. I can say to someone a vague location and a vague time and when we get there, we can ring each other and meet where the hell we like instead of people waiting under similar signs at the oposite end of the station, or whatever.
You can ring someone and let them know you'll be late because you're stuck on a train.

I get 300 texts a month free with genie/o2 which saves me a tremendous amount of money. Damini and I use it all the time because phoning me at work, isn't always conveinient.

You can text someone just to touch base with an old friend that you might not have anything particularly important to say to so a phone call isn't necessary, but just to let them know you're thinking of them and wish the well.

If it comes to a case of NEED then we don't NEED toilets cos a hole in the ground will do, we don't NEED planes cos a boat or a bike will do.

They make life easier and less stressful. They save time too just using the "meeting" example above.

I commute and I am stuck on a train for 2x 2.25 hour journies a day so texting on my phone is VERY handy to keep in touch with people and occupy my time.

No body NEEDS a mobile phone apart from in emergencies but they have become part of our modern day culture, just like toilets, planes, cars etc. They facilitate easy quicker lifestyles.

You never used a "Pedal-O" before then? No one ever said bikes HAVE to go on land. Smart arse.

The issue is not the usage of these things, itself, but the way these things are used for the sake of it.

In Kenny's example, he states that text messages are useful for when there is no need for a conversation. If there's no point in phoning someone, i don't see why there would be any point in texting them either? There is nothing wrong with communicating, however communicating for the sake of it, especially through such an utterly shite medium... By all means, do so if you want, just don't expect me to not be annoyed by it.

My comparison with the Internet, is that so many people "make" websites for the sake of it, people are told that they must get used to it because "it's the future"; Soon we'll be able to vote online - Very nice, but rather pointless when our electorial system means the ballot box is never very far away.

Maby i am a bit elitist, and perhaps very slightly narrowminded, but what is wrong with that? You're entitled to your oppinions, and i'm entitled to mine.

OK, maybe so... but those people suck and I don't know them :-/

That's just the marketing... it's all a load of bollocks; designed to get stupid people to buy things without the real need for them (these people fall into the category mentioned in Kez's post).

Like Sar, I've had a 3310 for around a year - the 500 character limit plus the useful predictive text thingy makes it perfectly easy to get messages across in non-abbreviated (albeit simple) English. It's just like a mini-portable-email device for when you're out and there's no computers around, like... :-?

Utterly shite? Do explain. It's technically adequate, does what it was designed to do, and is useful. And if you get annoyed at people communicating for the sake of it well... then that makes you sound like a total hermit :-/

On a side note, has anyone seen this new Vodafone ad that allegedly has NIN - The Perfect Drug as it's backing music? I keep looking out for it but haven't seen it :|

Only reason I bought Q1 :)

Never even played it, bought it for the soundtrack. Ripped it and that's that, not been out of it's case since.

I think you mean 'Joystick' ;) and I think its a great feature, makes the games on it easier to play :) The only complaint i've got about the phone is the insane menus you have to go through to send a simple text!!! My old 3330 would wack em out in mere seconds :(
