Mobile phone - part of the screen is dead?

Basically, when the phone is switched on, everything on the screen loads up except the top left corner, which is completely black and dead, as though it has been damaged in some way.

Does anyone know what caused this and any ways to go about helping to resolve it?

Phone needs to be sent in repair. Basically the whole "Dead Pixel" thing, or general damage. Send it in with insurance, no way you can fix it.

Phone is broken.
Get a new one. Tbh mobiles are so relatively cheap these days its not economical to repair it.
If you have insurance then throw the phone in the canal and tell insurance that it was knicked.
Even better tell the insurance it was knicked by someone dressed as a marine mammal who answered to the name "Teh Seal".
That would be good for a giggle

unless it's brand new, never been dropped and you still have the reseat ?

my phone has a single white line across about 2/3's up the screen.

put your mouth over the speaker and gently breathe 3 times with a count of 5 inbetween then push the send button 1...2....3....4...5......then breathe this should revive it if things get really serius i can explain how to make a phone defibulater with a double a battery and some dental floss.

you dont need to send it off or buy a new one, you need to get a new LCD, sounds like you've cracked the old one, very common thing to do. depending on phone some are easy to replace, others not so if your confident you can do it, a LCD will cost u around £20-30 for most phones.
