Miraculous ISDN Ping?

Um. Doesnt that mean, in a roundabout way, that the (5:1?)compression allows quake to be more efficient?

Does that not also imply their is scope to push your settings that little bit harder - and still have a stable ping?

what it mainly means for me, is that I don't push my limits, and when 5 plasma spamming muppets come running at me my ping doesnt hit 500 :)

A while back...

There was a thread like this on the cs boards. They worked out you could set cl_updaterate and cl_cmdrate really low and get 5 ping reported. Loads of people tried doing this, then realised that it wasn't actually real, and it was actually easier and more reliable to use sensible settings, which I guess would be the same here. Having cl_maxpackets 20 Will make you jerk around on the opponents screen. Movement gets smoother and smoother as your maxpackets go up, and anything less than 30 shouldn't be allowed. Same for snaps, having a really low figure will make your ping look low, but it won't make it good to play. The dos ping is your real ping, and you cannot physically get lower than that, whatever the q3 scoreboard reports. As babs said, the new netcode introduced better compression, which means you could in theory have more maxpackets than before with a simalar ping, but low maxpackets will have the same effect of lag on other peoples machines.

Yep, as I mentioned before, the Q3 ping reported is not real, it's a calculation based on a number of things, it is not the round trip delay that it should be. There is no cvar in Q3 to get it to report the accurate ping, but some mods made their own like in CCTF there is the cvar "seta cg_drawPing 1" to show a proper ping. This won't work in any other mod or Q3 tho.

If you want to see the variation in ping, just hop on a server set cl_maxpackets 100 com_maxfps 100 and look at ping then type in com_maxfps 3 and watch your ping. Lower the snaps to 10 and watch the ping double. The point is you wouldn't want to play like that, what is reported as a low ping in Q3 is actually bad for you.

The point is a lower maxpackets setting is actually delaying updates from you to the server. If your PC is set for maxpackets 20, thats 20 updates a second, which means if you press the fire button, it will have to wait up to 1sec/20=50ms before it sends the packet to the server. If maxpackets is 100, thats 1/100=only 10ms before it updates the server.

Like I said ignore Q3 ping, I can make my ping appear to others like I'm playing on a modem when I in fact have a ping of 20 and play fine, or make it look lower.

best thing is to stop getting a complex over pinging and just settle for settings that feel the best. even if you have a DOS ping of 20 it doesn't mean Q3 packets will abide by this, in nearly all cases it will be greater due to the rate of updates. go for settings that cause the least spiking and don't overload your connection. (a good indication is the least yellow in the netgraph the better)
