Can someone clarify role playing?

If i play with a troll say "eyes wuns tu kill stuff" or "can me comes beats stuffs wid yus" i usually get few responces....EXCEPT when playing with female players. And i mean FEMALE in RL.

The only general rping i've seen is folks bowing and saying "thankyou kind sir" when you help them, or generally speaking in a way which does not reflect them in real life.

I have noticed tho, say you play a Troll Warrior. If everytime you respawn after dying, say "Oooh me back ere again!" People will eventually start to respond to you calling you a stoopid big smelly troll and suchlike, which is rping to me. By definition to me imo.

RP = Refering the the ingame characters and character world by only using references within the players world.

So if its 10 in the morning in Jordhiem you greet folks with "morning" even if its actually 10pm at night where you live.

When you address someone you are speaking to his/her character as a real entity not as a character or some other person sitting at a computer.

However, some of you like to kind of story tell roleplay which confuses the hell outda me. This "He picks up his mug of ale, takes a sip, then slowly puts the mug back on the table, before lifting his...." and so on only maybe more descriptive...to me this aint role playing...its story telling... maybe some off shoot, of p&p dungeon mastery..."The orc lifes his bow and shoots an arrow at you" as opposed to my version "dat green ting dere ee goin to, ta da smack me wi ids stick ting" which i suppose sounds like i'm speaking klingon to some...

To me, it's like humour: the more you try to define it, the more you spoil it for yourself.

I think it's an important question, though.

Must say that Roleplay is more popular and common in Albion. Maybe due to the fact that it is less challenge to roleplay human characters than other species. When i was playing Ivan the SB in mid i rarely saw any RP, apart from several fellow Illuminate members. Lets say that im totally for Roleplay as i think it compliments the content rather nicely, but at times i found that when in groups others didnt have a clue of what i was talking about, sometimes due to language barriers, mainly i just had to ' drop my act' to have at least decent communication within the group which everyone benefits from.
I also would like to wager that most people are lazy and dont want to be creative in their roleplay <when they do rp>.... not that i ever thought that its easy. My line of reasoning is that to keep Roleplay original and entertaining it has to be special thus not casual or day-to-day.... because routine leads to loss of interest imho.

I roleplay the whole time. There is no l33t speak, though I let off your exaggerations to get the point across. Its funny the l33t speak you see are people roleplaying it. As when your grouped with them they do it to take the mickey just as dear old Brannor has done here. Its always done with a smile.

I agree the previous posters point about responses in the game. Whatever you do dont right essays in RvR you will be dead half way through the sentence.

In real life I'm a mild mannered janitor or whatever Hong Kong Phooey was. In the game I'm just a total arse

To be honest the best place for roleplaying are boards or when crafting. So many people will dabble when they are sitting down not having to concentrate on mobs or enemy.

Hello my fellow Midgardians,

In this thread once again the famous 'what is roleplaying' question was asked. As my guildmate Ayam mentioned it will spoil the fun to define exactly what roleplaying is. Others also mentioned that it is impossible to define what exactly roleplaying is.

Both may be right, but back in the times, the good old ones, you know <smiles softly>, there was a wise man, called Belirahc. He used to talk and drink a lot in the VN Boards Inn. This wise man once tried to define what roleplaying is and he even hold a couple of classes about the topic. You will find his scrolls following these magical links:

Roleplay 101: Essence of Roleplay (part 2) < http://vnboards.ign.com/message.asp?topic=21520413&replies=18 >

Back in these days I also tried to write down some of my thoughts about roleplaying on the Barge of Avalon at http://www.arthons-place.com/daoc.

As others mentioned above I also don't roleplay all the time. It highly depends on the group I am in. If you are in a full group of 8 players it is very hard to act as your character would do when you get no reactions from the other players. Most of the time all the reactions you get are like: lol, rofl lmao .. The same goes for RVR, in the heat of the battle there is simply not enough time to type out in lenghts what your character is thinking or doing. You probabely will die at the blade of an albion before you are done typing.

But there are a lot of boring time in RVR we all know like the waiting for the enemy to arrive or the defending of some mg. These times are great opportunities to roleplay. Believe me!

As for developing your characters I love to start out with a simple idea. Lets have a look at my little kobold shaman. I started out to play him with the picture I had in my mind of a small little kobold. I like to call this 'playing the stereotype'. Just like the dumb troll who only knows battle and talks like 'me good bashing, me bash a lot'.

Don't get me wrong. I think this is a good start and probabely the most easiest one. But after a while this will become a bit boring and you will want to go a bit deeper. Starting from there you can work on your characters traits.

Back to my little kobold: as he is a shaman he allways had this strange kind of love for nature in common. But as of lately he developped this strange kind of affection for all sorts of animals. And he can't ressist to pet them whereever he sees them. Of course in the most inappropriate moments like in the middle of a battle or something like that.

You will see as soon as you give your character this little special trait you will get a lot more reactions to it in the game. And believe my, your character will never be done or finally developed. You allways can add or change some of his behaviour.

I really would love to see more roleplaying going on our server and hope to meet as many of us out there in the nex time.

I was previledged to overhear Ayam berating some poor young noobs in Vasudheim who were on the roof of some building the other day - threatening them with all sorts if they didnt repair the damage they were doing to the building - fraid I was laughing so much I couldn't contribute anything at the time!!!

Yes I reckon more role-playing is a good thing and makes the game much more enjoyable but I tend to keep it to the down-time - as a kobold in Spindelhalla I get a bit defensiive about peeps beating up my poor mad cousin down there

roleplayi DAoC is hard to come by and so many peeps i find respond in this leet garbbage, i know to them it's like a second language, like french to an englishman (sorry for the comparison) but when trying to take them seriouly i find it really hard and when it goes on in Bg then i spend 20 mins with the leet dictionery trying towork out that the lvl 16 runie is telling my there is a stealther then i loose all intrest in the raid, i find that Rp'ers take a little more time over what they are saying and know what they are doing (usually not breking mez or pulling dragon.. or some sh*t), i Rp where i can but ifind that i'm (unfortuntly) surrounded by leet fags

Here Here,

What do all these young little wipersnappers think it is, CS, point click bang?

Sorry but all l33t means to me is someone trying top type "leer" drunk and hitting the keys next to thier intended target.

If we all put a little effort in it really adds to the game.

I remember being stuck to my dear friend Roo headed off for a hunt in Malmo with a set of about 16 hardy adventurers, I went afk for some reason (Probably screaming baby :D), got back to find myself hugging a lovely tree. let the group know and Roo in true spirit was there to make light of the 2 min delay I had caused, it went something like

"Sorry everybody, Gerta asked if she could stop to pick some flowers, but being a troll she got rather attached to a tree instead"
