Ok so last week 2 of the 3 major internet/telecoms hard wired links between Middle East Region and Europe are cut. This happened just north of Egypt. Internet went to crap here. After 2 days we get back about 40-50% but latnecy has gone to shit. 1600 mS to BBC.co.uk! Mainly due to routing via Satelite station in Oman. Yesterday the submarine cable between the UAE and Oman was cut! Looking more and more like a terrorist attack against Dubai/UAE to bring down the economy.

The cable cuts also affected India massively with most call centre links to the UK were running at around 40%. Maybe the UK banks will start to rethink the whole off shore support thing.

Could Al-Qieda or some other nutty group be targeting the net now? Given the importance to business these days are the lines secure enough.

No internet gaming for at least two weeks :(

It does look more and more like some sort of attack. They are impossible to protect though, miles and miles of underwater cabling.

sucks for people who live there :(

Well it seems that it is now four cables as a cable connecting Qatar to Duabia via Haloul Island and Das has also been cut.

Internet problems continue with fourth cable break - Technology - ArabianBusiness.com

I dont think ti would be strange to suggest that this might be a lot more then just a ships anchor cuttng cables and more likely has some sort of sinister reason behind it. Though what that is i have no idea but i am pretty sure it will be cleared up soon enough.

These are some of the wilder stories doing the rounds as reasons or causes of these "attacks."

There are even worse ones out there comparing the current events with the cutting of cables by the British at the beginning of WW's

Conspiracy theories gave me a chuckle the articles are quite hilarious. The entire Middle East and Sub Continent looses most of its internet and telecomms and people are mainly talking about Iran/Egypt. Qatar is affected which is the biggest US military base in the Middle East. Also UAE and Oman both US Allies. It could be an Al Qieda attack on the Middle East econmies it so dispises for being ally to the western powers.

Definitely seems to be a co-ordinated attack. Argueably the biggest looser in all this has been India with all the call centres and outsourced programming companies. Although unlike the Middle East Telecom operators they quickly rerouted most traffic to cables going East.
