So... it's 7 years since I built my pc so I feel justified in spending a bit of cash on some new kit. Think I'll keep case, PSU and HDDs but aim to get a new CPU, Mobo, Cooler, RAM, GPU and SSD.

I know you'll kick off, but I am staying intel for the CPU, with an I7-12700k processor.
Looking at ASUS prime z690-p mobo and an ID cooling A620b cooler.

I'm not home right now to post exact current specs, sorry. I'm now interested in suggestions for RAM and SSD please, or alternatives to the above.

I am half-tempted to give the ARC B580 a shot for GPU - comments?

Ta in advancio!

I don't have any real advice regarding individual bits of kit, but I would check your current PSU to make sure it has the required bits and bobs. In particular the mobo and gpu power connections are/have been changing recently.

Depends what resolution you run etc I guess, if you still run 1080p, arc B580 will be fine, really solid 1080p card.

Alternative would be waiting for new NVIDIA cards and try snap up a 4070 / 4070 Ti on the cheap maybe, I'm sure there will be price drops, just not sure by how much.
Hmmm... so far just 1080p but my monitor is capable of more so I wouldn't want to rule it out... will do more research on that but I'm not keen on waiting and trying to get someone's 2nd hander, and new card prices will take quite a while to drop....

Good advice - looked up what I have currently and I am pretty sure it will be ok (will check):

Ignoring the advances with Zen 5 and discarding the upcoming RDNA4 advances is a bit shortsighted. I would stay away from 13th and 14th gen Intel if I was building today.

I won't disagree - there does seem to be some decent stuff in the pipeline but this will end up in the latest tech - I am deliberately staying off the bleeding edge stuff to save cost, and yes, don't fancy any of the 13th / 14th intel BIOS issues thanks very much!

Not entirely familiar with 13th/14th gen stuff by intel, I do vaguely remember seeing something about motherboard manufacturers fucking settings up or something for them though burning out cpus or something.

Yeah - this is what I referred to. There werre afew examples of Mobo default BIOS voltages being too high even at idle, and some chips melted... pretty horrid! If you do get a 13th or 14th gen Intel chip defintely check the BIOS and / or flash it before installation or asap after.

Aye, its a shame really because despite the silly prices Intel was always a good quality product, this going forward just makes me feel you have to wait for reputable reviewers like Gamers Nexus to see if the newer gens are still fucked or, if they've been sorted out to the 13/14 gen stuff.

I've a 13900k and never had any issues, I do like to keep my BIOS up to date for security and performance reasons which has been annoying because they've released so many to try and fix/avoid issues with recent Intel processors.

A nice even upgrade is best advised, there is no point in going OTT on any one component.

Incidentally, this is what I currently run:

Operating System: Windows 10 Pro 64-bit (10.0, Build 19045) (19041.vb_release.191206-1406)
BIOS: 0612 (type: UEFI)
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8700K CPU @ 3.70GHz (12 CPUs), ~3.7GHz
Memory: 16384MB RAM
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB

The 1060 was kind of accidental - helped my son upgrade by buying that off him 2nd hand when he wanted to upgrade.

I will say what is nice about AMD is they don't tend to change socket often which means a less expensive future upgrade because you don't need to change motherboard every couple of processor generations.

I run a couple of WD Black SN850s (2TB) but you've plenty of options, even the SN850 has now been replaced by SN850x.

Yeah - going to the dark side and using an AM5 platform was very tempting I must say! So far I have picked out the Samsung 2TB:

I have a similar one in this machine and it has seemed solid for me.... happy to be taught otherwise, of course!

Ok - so this is pretty much it... the case is not the one listed here, was tough finding something the right size for my desk and without glass panels and RBG shitness so I got this:

I hope folks approve and don't spot any glaring errors... I will u7se Amazon to buy most of this as I had great service from them when I nearly fucked up my build 7 years ago!

Make sure you update the firmware of the Samsung 990 Pro, older firmware versions had some nasty issues.

Overall? Unsure, but probably around the £1800 mark in total... got part way through and kinda went 'why not 64GB' or 'why not 100W' etc - I'm treating myself to cheer me up from Mum and Dad's inheritance, who both left us last year x

EDIT - and no, Tony, you big nose, not p0rn!!!

Sounds like you could do with building a DIY NAS. Two of them. You backup your RAIDed PC data to the NAS, and then sync the data off the NAS to the other NAS conveniently placed off-site. That is of course after making cold backup copy on an external drive, and then buying a LTO Library to perform tape backups of the PC _and_ NAS.

It's only sensible.
