Microsoft didn't think of windows though Some hippies made it back in the day and in their good nature, decided to make it completely free to use and modify (differently legislated to linux these days).

Bill Gates and co just got the framework from them, modified it and made it a universal standard. Windows wasnt their idea in the first place

Tbh I really don't think that they are "kicking" themselves now. The idea behind open source is really nice - and just because some people try to exploid it, does not make it a bad idea.

No shit! I was merely referencing the fact that they made it TOO open source, so much so that companies could get it, tweak it and make a profit from it. The carefree attitude of them spawned one of the nastiest corporations out there; it's irony if you will and no matter what way you look at it, those hippies are gonna be kicking themselves for spawning the microsoft money machine.
