Heavy metal are bands such as metallica and iron maiden which are metal based on more of a melody then the rest. Long hair, solos a plenty kinda bands :D Riffs are concentrated as being more about the 'chugg' instead of speed in general.

Speed metal is how many beats a second you can clock up on the metronome before it breaks :p

Death metals prime example would be slayer. Very fast, ridiculous vocals and even more ridiculous topics always related to death.

Black Metal are shite bands like cradle of filth who I find very bland, always on about death also but the difference being is they try to make it more like a stage show and giving off the depressant persona instead of death metal which is more about the music.

Doom metal is just very drab 'I want to die' music which is probably the most boring, somber music you could ever listen to. A prime example would be 'my dying bride' of which the name kinda speaks for itself.

Thrash metal is a kind of 80's genre forgotten in the 90s and 00's unfortunately which is just about getting pissed and having a laugh. An example would be old metallica stuff like from the 'kill em all' album. Again fast but not serious at all...fuck the society kinda thing.

NWOBHM.....wtf?

Nu Metal is my pet peeve. It's the WORST type of music in the world bar none... Its basically teeny bopper music with distortion. Add a few swear words and call yourselves a metaller. It gives all metallers a bad name. Prime examples = limp bizkit, linkin park and papa roach. None of those bands will last the test of time, they're just like all the other 'billy pipers' of the world.

Power metal I'd say is pretty much the same as thrash tbh but thats just my opinion :)

Industrial metal would be a band like 'static-x' with quite suprisingly industrial sounds in there, very often with their recordings being very mixed and sounds added in which weren't recorded by the band.

If you think all metal sounds the same, download the following songs and I'm sure even a brittney spears fan could tell the obvious difference. Will pick obvious songs not the not so well known ones so you mighht recognise some.

Metallica - One or Master of puppets (heavy metal)
Impellitteri - Glory(speed metal)
Slayer - Angel Of Death (death metal)
Cradle of Filth - Ghost in the fog (absolute shite but a black metal example)
My Dying Bride - The cry of mankind (very boring doom metal band)
Metallica - Hit the Lights (Thrash metal)
Limp bizkit - mission impossible theme tune (nu metal)
Static-X - Black or white (industrial metal)

Don't blame me for what you like or dislike from the list, i only like part of it myself, just thought i'd give you the taste.

edit:nerf only being allowed one quote in a reply for some reason o_O

Anyone who says they are into metal but has no idea what the term New Wave of British Heavy Metal is needs to go back to rock school.

And your pigeonholing of other bands is way way off, if you are going to bother to give examples, at least give good ones.

Take static-x for example, they aren't particually industrial metal, they fuse techno and metal which is a different thing. Industrial metal is a completely different beast. Although the whole industrial debate is a huge can of worms.

Say it in its full and it's pretty damn easy to remmeber but the initials NWOBHM means shit to me cause I'm not a magazine reader which is where the trem probably originated from. It'd be like me saying IHNI and asking you what it means.

As for everyones 'opinions' on what type of metal falls under which catagory, it'd be narrow minded to assume everyone shares the same views. Personally I don't like pigeon holing because I like to think of the bands I listen to can't really be put under a title. All I was trying to do was show some1 who didn't understand the difference of any type the differences in a few examples.

I listen to almost all metal except nu-metal :eek7:

Btw I don't know if it's a genre itself but I like Symphonic metal aswell. Like Blind Guardian and Stratovarius.

the kind of metal where u hear some strange dude, who enjoys cutting his wrists in his spare time, screaming in the microphone, along with some circus monkey bashing the drums in all different rythms, doesnt really appeal to me..

wonder what u call that genre ;p

New Wave Of British Heavy Metal - bands that emerged in the late 70's/early 80's in the UK. Saxon, Iron Maiden, and dozens of others... scary amounts of information at http://www.nwobhm.com/

That was my era, being the old git that I am :)

Almost: I *think* the late, lamented "Sounds" weekly might have come up with it.

Prime example of some1 whos only heard limp dipshit and linkin crap and judges a huge genre on the basis of a very unvaried knowledge base :p

What you described is EXACTLY the type of nu metal which has destroyed the genre and its name. Not that I blame you or anything, if that was all I thought that existed, I'd hate 'metal' too but beleive me, it's not.

Metallica was also inspired by NWOBHM aswell which basically started alot of thrash metal off.
i must admit i like a wide range of "Metal" including quite a few that havent been mentioned i.e
Suicidal Tendencies - speed heavy thrash funk
Infectious grooves - ( suicidal tendencies under diff name ) funk metal .
Anthrax - started off like metallica but went ther own way some good albums some crap.
Megadeath - simlar to metallica then went a bit soft.
S.O.D - great band and speed freaks .
Method Of Destruction - all time fave band.
Nuclear assault - thrash metal.

Loads more but too knackered to type too much.

I also like some of the latest metal that is out not much just a bit, but as some one said ther is too many different types of metal nowadays compared to 15 - 20 years or so ago.

Yes i did start to move away from the basic metal stuff like IRON MAIDEN and stuff when METALLICA came on the seen around 1980 - 81.

But mostly now i listen to old stuff like Overkill , Metallica , Slayer , Anthrax amongst others.

cheers

I can honestly say I like ALL types off metal.

As for nu-metal, well all I can say is KoRn they made it what it is.
yeah yeah, all that depressing I wanna slit my wrist and BS.
Who cares, if you like the music then its good.

Take System of a Down for rock, they are great.

Ohh and Slipknot just released a new album.
Vol 3 (the subliminal verses).
Pure anger and hate, would suite some of you :)
Good for RvR.

Good for RvR.

I still credit Mordred as being about the earliest band which directly influenced the nu-metal sound, that and the anthrax/rap crossover period.

Although bay area thrash 4tehwin IMO.

This old school Metal like Iron Maiden and stuff like that is the worst kind of piece of s**t metal to listen to. Black/death Metal on the other hand is great. Bands like Limbonic Art, Marduk, Morbid Angel, Emperor, Satyricon...the list can go on for all eternity. :D

But i also listen to gangsta´rap like Notorious B.I.G, Ice Cube and Cypress hill :)
