(I lurk here and post occasionally). Both my last and current partners were met via the internet. The last one back in 99 and Kris I met from from WoW more recently...

In both instances there was water between us. Jamie lived in the UK and I lived on the Isle of Man. With Kris I live in the Netherlands and he is in Linkoping.

My advice is really to be prepared for absolutely anything and although Lamps descriptions are quite harsh in the god ,12 years that I have been using the internet many people are not quite what they say they are.

How far has your 'online' relationship gone?

ie have you spoken over the phone or skype, seen pictures, used webcams.

If you have not done the pictures / webcam thing then I would certainly not get your hopes up as physically you could be VERY incompatible and this is not just an issue of weight there are many other physical attributes you may not like about each other, like she may be a he.

As for personality, the internet gives us the unique opportunity to be something we are actually not, so the question is how much time have you spent communicating with each other?

Sexual compatibility have you established whether you are or not (you obviously don't have to answer this here).

Other stuff: Be prepared for not liking how they smell (sounds odd, but trust me really really important).

History
Do you know her background? Where is she from, how has she been brought up, what baggage could she potentially bring to your relationship that you are not prepared for (ie potentially children even though she is only 20 and a student)?

Finances
I know this one is harsh but I have encountered (not personally) situations where people have been stung in this area. Is she financially independent (even though she is a student). How much of a financial burden will this realationship bring. Not just in a normal relationship sense but if this is to work then you need to consider the cost of constant traveling as well as very high phone bills?

Currently Kris travels to NL twice a month unless we are both very very busy, but at the very least once a month.

I wish you well and although the above may seem negative it is not intended to be so, I am just pointing out some of the potential pitfalls you could facing.

No. Not everyone is confident enough to get out there face to face, even 20 year old students.

I could quite easily approach a woman and tell them Im a doctor or a pilot and I own a house in Barbados.
Believe it or not when I was on holiday I fooled a girl in to thinking I was French. I had her translating things to me in that 'youre a foriegner so I'll speak like a robot' voice and I was telling her things in 'French'. All this from a few things I picked up at GCSE and a dodgy accent. The most memorable being 'le straw' and her singing wonderwall to me as it was playing and trying to explain what it meant.
