Most of you probably know my 10 year old daughter is autistic.

Well since early this year she has been anorexic too, but is still not officially diagnosed.

We decided to raise our concern about her eating with the doctor early in May. 2 weeks wait for an appointment.

Since then everyone we've been in contact has said yes, she is really underweight, but unless she is about to die, which they can tell from the blood tests which we've had loads of times now, they can't actually section her and feed her with a tube. They keep telling us she needs mental health care.

They've recommended a few places but some we found out aren't even available to under 18s.

Apparently CAMHS is the only organisation that can actually do anything but when we referred her to CAMHS after the GP asked us to in late June they opened a case and CAMHS rang her school. The school just said she eats fine at school and CAMHS closed the case without any say from us.

A couple of days after this the school rang us to say she would have to go on to packed lunches every day because she wouldn't eat school dinners.

We tried a few other avenues to no avail over the summer and her general mental well-being continued to deteriorate. She can't even stand the sound of the cats meowing now and cries and wails and screams and scratches us constantly. She is desperately unwell. According to the charts her weight is in the bottom 1% for girls her age. She looks like a skeleton. We took her to A&E after one night where she had a complete breakdown because my wife and I ate a curry which she found horrifying. The doctor at the hospital finally managed to get us a new case with CAMHS but they stopped returning our calls.

When she went back to school they actually rang us up to ask us if we'd noticed that she was losing weight. I held back my urge to tell them to fuck right off and explained all the things we've done over the summer and after a few more conversations they decided to give CAMHS a ring themselves to support our case.

Things finally appear to be moving now (fingers crossed) but the whole system is fucked. She could be dead.

Rant over.

Our Son is autistic too, we had a right fuck on with CAMHS trying to get him some help at school (not the same circumstances as your daughter like), took us years, literally years of back and forth.

This is awful man, and it really is probably one of the worst cases I've heard of, and I've come across so many cases where kids desperately needed help and the response is up to 6 month waits, it's a scandal, and seemingly nationally.

I wouldn't tell the school to fuck off; CAHMS basically feed off information from the school, which is a massive problem as schools aren't really equipped to deal with it, but I'd badger the school to do something about it.

Have you also tried autism meeting groups? Perhaps not suitable for taking your daughter yet, but I know my cousin and his family found it extremely useful in exploring different strategies.

Hey fella - I desperately hope she gets the support she needs. My Grandson has just been diagnosed with ASD so I feel sympathy for you. I hope it reassures you to know that you are not alone, my friend.

I am autistic and diagnosed for 12 years.

everyone complains about how hard it is toget respurces to get dx’d.

let me tell you i have had no support since then. Just bunged me on anti depressants and give me meds for anxiety every now and then.

the nhs is great when you have a gapping wound or something that can be cured with a pill or an operation. As soon as you ask for support for mental problems it all breaks down.

igot offered group sessions. If you have asd then you know group shit is frightening and not a place to heal.

currently trying to find someone with asd knowledge through my employers care scheme.

i went to drsanywhere and the dr was great. Said this is what you need. Heres a referral. But my private health care insurer has no one near who i feel i can go to. And all the online shrinks have not signed up with insurers cause they can get 350 an hour from rich dudes.

Glad you are getting some traction. But its easier at 12 than 18+ and you can see how hard it is as 12

I can't offer any advice except to keep trying. A close friend had similar problems with his slightly older daughter, refused to leave the house, refused to eat, extreme mood swings etc. Took him years to get her sorted, but she is in a much better place now, not anywhere near perfect but manageable for the most part.

A lot of areas in the country are now starting to get new Mental Health Support Teams( MHST on google) and these are taking on a lot of the cases that CAMHS refuse. I cannot say if you have one in your locality but i also have an autistic child and fully understand your situation and hope you find the support you need now things are moving forward.

Yea the MHST is mainly for children but some areas work beyond 18 for people with additional needs. In my particular area we have an Adult Autism Service for 18+ and that offers mental health and life support along with just groups to help socialisation. Sadly its a postcode lottery and many areas miss vital services. A lot of the time it boils down to individual workers with an interest or experience in areas like ASD that then go on to push past the boundaries set by lack of funding and set up support groups ect.

She is now in hospital.

She spent the night there last night with the wife. I can't even visit as that's only allowed twice a week.

Her heart rate is very slow.

This is awful. Our NHS is very good at stitching people back together, but seems to be very poor at mental and social care. I hope she gets better soon mate.

This. I have had years of it with my wife, trying to get the right support. She isn't too bad now most of the time but has long periods of not even being able to get out of bed with depression and anxiety.

Yup exactly. fine at a broken bone or a cut. But anything mental that takes time and effort to fix theres not much out there or years waiting.

Spending the weekend in hospital with her. No booze for me this week :/

Also regretting getting a cheeky curry in last night before I set off. I'm going to stink the place out any minute which is embarrassing when the nurse comes in to check Alexandra's feeding tube.

Might try blaming Alexandra for it.
