Medication Help

I really need a beer after work, but I recently started taking some new medication.

The instructions in the box say that "Alcohol should be avoided", but mentions nothing about the effects or if it is dangerous.

I need a site that lists the effects of alcohol on medication. Anyone know a good one?

The medication is Propranolol if anyone knows of the effects that would be good as well.

What's the drug for if you don't mind me asking... I've got an oldish BNF (well it's from 1992) here I'll look it up in there to see if there's an entry for it..

BNF is the official "drug" book doc's etc use but it's listed under drug types....

It'll be alot quicker for me to find it, if I know what it's for...

Yeah, it's propranolol. An Anti-Anixetiy drug that is also used to treat people who've had heart attacks. Basically it impares the bodies ability to race it's heart fast, thereby stopping panic attacks and the such.

All I can find so far is that alcohol may make me tired and dizzy. Funnily enougth that's what alcohol usually does to me

One website did say it was very dangerous to drink on this medication, but it was an American one.

Aha, the online BNF says the interaction of Propranolol and Alcohol will give a "Enhanced hypotensive effect."

What's that mean?

Are you taking it as an anti-anxiety drug??

When I was on em they just had the effect of making me trip out on 2 bottles of larger..

If you have/had heart problems high blood pressure is v.bad

It seems that however the two react there is an increased risk of dizzyness/drowsyness. The problem being that your chance of having an accident will probably increase.

I would ask your GP for advice though and not us plebs. Id doubt if there was a doc among us maybe a medical student or nurse at best.

Yep, taking it for anxiety. I've never had any heart/blood pressure problems in my life. And there's no history in the family that I know of. Never broken a bone in my body either

I'll try a pint of stella and see what happens

My brother is a GP (and a gamer/forum trawler) if I speak to him over next couple of days Ill see what he says.

In the meantime Id lay of the booze till you get professional advice, maybe there is alternative medication.

NOTE: I am not medically qualified in any way... I just have an interest in that area... my advice comes from reading a book I *borrowed* from a medic while on work experience And based on my experience of drugs I was taking for anxiety/depression...

I was told not to have more than the odd pint of alcohol and NOT to take any psychotropic drugs "not even the occasional spliff."

TBH... you should be ok with the odd pint or so.... I really wouldn't push it without consulting your doctor...

but yes... see your doctor for REAL advice.... the drug your taking is not the one I took so a completely different set of rules could go...

I used to take that drug during my days at Uni for an ectopic or irregular heartbeat (came from Gladular Fever).

It's usually referred to as a beta-blocker (with the greek letter beta)

I'd advise you not to drink while taking it. Nasty stuff.

It will impair your intellect while taking it too but it's only temporary (no jokes please)

Beta-blockers are in a different league from what whipped has been given. I'd say everything in moderation and you'll be fine. I certainly would get stoned on the various medical drugs I've been given, and I'm still breathing. On top of which, some of them lead to very interesting experiences.

Went to the cinema last night and watched a film without my mind wondering off to "whether the people behind me had a big gun to shoot me in the head" type things. Lovely.

They were very effective when I was on them. As chilled out as a Hindu cow who was meditating.

Just the withdrawl was a bit of a shock.

i've been taking it for the last 18 months, with alcohol so I wouldnt worry about it. I must add though that I do get headaches and have palpitations, which is why I eat a lot of tomatoes
