Password-IS of the charity thread, aka ad- of the hlccl and so.. posts, aka Pana of the not understanding the hostility to new members.

From the start this was a worthless exercise on my part as people rarley change their ways of thinking. You (bw)think that "lurking" is a way of introducing yourselves to others while we (hlccl) prefer to actually get involved with the communtinty we have joined.

Lurking as you say gives you a feeling of the way your forum is run but it gives you nothing else. Not been able to interact with others because of the fear of been ridiculed (flamed), by people who seem to get pleasure from it isn't how a public forum should be run or controlled. The whole idea of the forums is for like minded people to talk about things that interest them. Your comeback to this will probably be that flaming is all part of this forum and if you dont like it leave. But that is bollox and we all know it. To flame someone for the wrong reasons or just because you can is juvenile, pointless and destructive, as demonstrated from the charity thread.

I think most of the flames here are due to this pack mentality that seems to be everywhere in our society. Once you have your foot in the door just follow what everyone else does so you dont look out of place , if you agree or not. The pub analogy is a perfect example of what is wrong here and many other places. It maybe your regular haunt but it doesn't give you sole rights to it.

Well I hope this all dies down soon and you can get back to the way you were, if that is what you want ?. I never asked for any support on this from the HLCCL guys, I just wanted to see what response a perfectly legit thread would get. I was n't too suprised by the attacks or the defense it got from some of your regulars having read the forum before I posted, but I'm happy that the majority saw it as a good thing.

Im sure you can pick holes in my reasoning and will enjoy talking about it later this evening. The way forums should work.

Password thingy - your ideas of a forum differ from ours. We like it here so we stay. New people come along, some of them fit in and they stay. Other people don't like it and leave. Easy.

You've completely missed the point of lurking. You talk as though lurking involves sitting on the sidelines, reading and never posting. This would be a pretty bare forum if that was the case. Lurking is simply getting a feel for the place, establishing what the practises are and then adding your contribution.

Lurking is a way of ensuring that the forum is the kind of place that you want to be a part of, and helps to ensure that what you do is kosher. I agree, being a regular doesn't give you sole rights to someplace, however, being one of the people who help make something exist means you do have some kind of comeback on the way people act; The regulars define what a place is. Without the regulars this place would be nothing like it currently is, it'd be empty, and you lot certainly wouldn't bother coming here.

The fact is that a geat number of the people from the HL forums or whatever have come over with a pack mentality, a mentality just as voracious and idiotic as shown by the regulars, especially that Pav person, Tarby, and the stupid 'hacker' kids. I'm not saying that either side is justified, however, when it comes down to it, the onus is on YOU to fit into the community, not the other way around.

Don't underestimate the importance of fitting in, just like on usenet, forums have a mo that is definied by the regulars. Top posting is frowned upon in most of the better NGs, so posting spam messages is seen as wrong here. Just as posting binaries is frowned upon in NGs, so is joining a forum and posting on a subject for which a forum already exists (ie the Half Life forums). Informal rules exist in all situations, and part of being a decent member of society is following those rules, whether they be expressly set out or not. To go against them is just rudeness and discourtesy, which is why the flaming starts. If someone posts a thread spamming a URL to try to gain from it, they have borken one of the 'rules' and can be deemed an impolite person, why should the regulars go out of their way to be polite to people who are rude initially? This is where lurking comes in again, by lurking you learn the lay of the land as it were, you learn what is rude and what isn't.

If you can't be bothered to do so, then perhaps you are the sort of rude person this forum would be better off without....

u guys keep saying read the newbie guide.. does this mean that u follow it?

it says in there 'treat others how u would want to b treated.. im sure your mother told u that' or something like that

in that case it would mean that all of u (the ones that flamed all this) want to be sworn at, personally insulted and flamed like hell?

surely this cant b true so i would suggest.. all the 'regulars' reread the newbie guide.

again i mean no flame by that, and im not 'acting the biggie' but im sure u'll agree.. no point preaching wot u dont practice. or is there a regulars guide as well as a newbie guide?
