Hi, I'm looking to buy my first car, a second hand (1990-1995?) mazda mx 5 really appeals and seems to be well reviewed on youtube footage of well known tv programs.

I was wondering if anyone had any personal experiences with this car, or any suggestions or tips in general.

Thanks!

They are good cars, do exactly what they say on the tin.

Amazing first car, Jups was a horse.

Slightly bad image with them but if you like them then go get one.

How much for a blow dry?

I've driven an MX5 1.6.

The 1.6 isn't fast, but it's brilliant to drive; lots of fun, rear wheel drive, good grip and handling top down action, well made and reliable.

I loved it. Would love one that was actually fast though, someone does a V8 conversion :).

I drove a 1.8 to france a few years ago at work. it was too hot becuase the aircon wasnt working, and uncomfortable and seemed really crude. Id buy an MR2 instead if I were you.

Get your self an Alfa Romeo, will be pretty pricey on the insurance as a new driver tho... Mine was £1200 last year with 2 years no claims/experiance. And this year it has come down to £567 with 3 years. Not bad a guess, only 22y/o and it a 2litre.

Do it. MX5s are ace. My sister was going to buy a Micra, I persuaded her to test drive an MX5, she bought it there and then.

She's in love with the thing. Ignore all the hairdresser comments, the same people slag Porsche drivers off, think BMWs are all owned by wankers, Ferraris are rich tossers, etc. The same people will also be driving some wanky old rep-mobile and will think a car is for getting from A to B.

^ Wot he said ^ MX-5's are great fun, very reliable, and unlike a lot of similar vintage hot hatches, are far more likely to have been looked after. I would try to get a 1.8 if you can, the 1.6 is a bit weedy.

I know what you mean, and agree in a way, but Im just saying an MR2 is a similar, but much better car.

Which MR2? There were three different versions, all very different. The Mid-90s one was the best looking but it didn't handle that well (very twitchy, with a tendancy to swap ends), and I certainly would recommend one as someone's first car. The original one was great (my Dad had one) but they're quite rare, (and old now), and the third-gen one will still be relatively expensive, and personally I'd say it wasn't as good as the equivalent age MX-5. I test drove one and it was cramped and not that quick, in fact the MG-F was probably better (and cheaper to run) as well.

Dunno about that really, I had a Jap import turbo one on a J reg or so as a company car ,it handled alright I thought. I just thought it was much better made than the comparable Mazdas I was selling at the time.

Having said that, it was pearlescent white, I had it for a week then said look give me something else, I was in grave danger of losing me image, know what I mean :)

Summo's been busy fagging it up at RADA. Hope he's enjoying it, the great big poof. Anyone want to dig up the photoshop mx5 thread and not just one image? IIRC that was quality. We used to rule at photoshopping :D

BTW, fuck the mx5 and get an S2000 instead.

Except for the price, insurance and running costs over the MX5.

An MX-5 is something I would consider if I was ever forced to sell the Elise, although the hairdresser jibes would be even worse with one I would imagine. They are meant to be a lot of fun, and easy to drive in a hooning manner. I wouldn't really call them a 'sportscar' in the most genuine sense, but they are getting there. Just trying to think back a year or two to when I was in the motor trade, and I can't remember selling much in the way of major mechanical bits for them either, so I think they're pretty reliable, as most Japanese cars tend to be.

One thing though, I don't know your circumstances, but as a first car don't expect the running costs to be the same as your mates in their saxos and fiestas. Brakes will cost you around 4 times as much, from memory, and service items will be a bit more expensive too.

On the other hand, I think a 2 seater will definately have it's advantages. My first car was a pick-up which was great as I was never called upon for pub runs as I could only carry one passenger :)
