max workinng hours in the UK?

Working Time Regulations - DTI

You can't be made to work more than 48 hours in any 7 day period, of course you can opt out and work overtime but they have to get you to sign a release form for that.

The UK is covered by the EU working time directive, however it excludes some jobs ( I think doctors,nurses, key workers etc.)
However you can sign a waiver and work whatever you want (I did stupidly at my old job!)

When I signed it I think it was 54 hours in a week (a gew years ago now)

I was once at a job doing 75 hour weeks :| but like Cho said, they have to get you to sign release forms to agree to that, they cant just make you do it straight away.

Unless it was in the small print at the start? or even then you'd probably have to physicially do the forms or whatever.

Nope its not illegal.

Most law firms will refuse you a job unless you 'volunteer' to opt out of the WTD.
The NHS is exempt as its not a proper company or something and is run by the gov, or atleast something like them allows them to weedle their way out of it.

You'll want to check your employment contract to see what it says about hours / WTD.

Well I believe the 'standard' week is between 35 and 40 hours. I personally work more as I get paid for it (agreed) or TOIL (on agreement)

If your contract says 40 hours a week, your seen to work just that... if its over, they have to pay you either overtime or offer TimeOff as extra holiday. Check your companys terms and conditions / policy (as they rarely put stuff like this in your contract), if its not easy to find, HR are responsible for this and are there to provide it.

Hope you get it sorted, although I used to do 72 hour weeks (!) it is really annoying when you get f'k all for it

as far as ASDA is concerned the max hrs i can work there is 9.5

As far as I'm aware, after signing the release form you can work 6 days a week. Have once been refused when I asked for overtime to work all 7 days doing my 12 hour nights. Was saving up for my guitar at the time so wanted a final burst of pay before going to London for it.

Pretty sure you aren't allowed to work more then 12 hours a day regularly also.

I could be wrong, it may just have been the company/agencys policies.

Generally research has shown any working week above 40 will start to impact on quality/ induce stress. However its of course dependant on many factors such as job role and individual concerned.

Alot of contracts opt you out of the WTD as Tilda said... European culture tends to dictate less working hours, however as EU law has soveriegn over our national.. we are still bound by it.
