Matrix Game

Browsing through my game collection I realise that the only movie title game I've ever bought was Nightbreed for the Amiga. Oh and not counting the Star Wars franchise.

No way I'd have bought this one.

I got it. The stand out bit from the few short goes I've had on it was not realising I was supposed to wait for a bridge to go down, jumping said bridge and falling through the world into blackness, from which the only escape was to restart the level. THEY CHANGED SOMETHING!

The game is riddled with bugs - both show-stopping and graphical (clipping, collision detection, etc)

When I heard Shiny were working on this game, I expected something along the same lines in quality terms as M.D.K (which for its time was a very polished game/engine)... sadly it seems they spent most of the time/money pissing in the wind, before spending the last few weeks before launch frantically cobbling together code... not unlike my final year at Uni.

The game itself will only run in 60hz - if you have any refresh rate fixers (e.g. to stop Win2k/XP running games in 60hz) then the game will not work. Bugs like that tbh shouldn't even be in any released game.

Remember Messiah? That was shiny. They suck arse.

There are some good bits later in the game, some nice FMV and some good fights when you get to the house in the mountains. Other than that, though, the game is utter utter arse.

Messiah had a good game engine though, even if the premise of the game itself was ropey.

They could've saved themselves a lot of time and trouble if they'd just licensed the Remedy engine used for Max Payne (which already perfected bullet time) and just customised it. The ETM game engine is very, very poor - graphical glitches, slowdown, etc. Not what you'd expect from Shiny.

Except that ETM has a rival on the Max Payne engine already in the shape of Max Payne Kung Fu 3.0

It's a cheap mod made by a fan of kung fu flicks.

It is better than ETM.

I liked V2.0 better than V3.0 though. :\

TBH, so did I.

3.0 gets a bit over complicated. Still, very cool stuff :D

The one to look out for is Matrixed Reality (PuPu Edition) - It's got V.3 & some groovy matrix effects.

Do the stats actually make any difference apart from letting you get a new move for each level though?

It actually has the capacity to look great. There's a ball room in the chateau that looks awesome. Unfortunately these only cover up the shitness for a matter of minutes.

Notice how they didn't allow anyone to review the game untill a good few days after it was released, at which point they all said it was turd.

I wonder if they have all finished playing the game before giving their opinion :D

Well, if they didn't I imagine they'd give it a higher rating than they did, as the last level is utter utter turd and would leave even more of a bitter taste in the mouth of the reviewer.

TBH if they used the max payne engine for ETM it'd utterly rock. The gunplay is sorted already, natch, and the fighting in ETM was pretty good already.

Oh well. Shiny suck big azz.

Except you never actually did the code, you just pretended you did.

I spent fucking ages downloading ETM within about 10 minutes of Deviance releasing it. The discs are still sat on one of my speakers, uninstalled. Waste of 48p really.

If you can bare it, it gets a bit better half way through when you get to the chateau. Actually, just go to hacking and enter a cheat so you can get there. That level is 98% one on one fights. Fuck all guns, it's quite fun. Almost.
