I've never really understood the need for labeling Metal with such a Plethora of sub-genres.
Imagine doing the same with pop.. Grind pop, Groove pop and Traditional doom pop! :D
Cool map though :)

Nice.

I suppose it's since the bands want to be the band that started this genre rather then just another metal band Angrist.

It is kind of understandable though, you can't really compare Dillinger Escape Plan with Metallica etc.

Most genres that achieve a measure of popularity end up with subgenres. 'Pop' is not a genre a such because it doesn't represent any particular style of music and so usually doesn't have subgenres though people have tried in the past with things such as Britpop etc.

It's actually to give the fans a clearer image of what to expect. Kinda like with games having RTS/FPS/etc.

If you were to have a special evening at a metal bar with "Metal evening" instead of "Industrial metal evening", you'd get a lot less venue.

Same goes with selling CDs and so on. Just a way to show exactly what the metal is about.

Roo; repped as much as i can :D

there is so much variation between different styles that it would be mad to refer to all metal bands under exactly the same name. People often make fun of all the different names that are used but if you listen to some power metal and then some death metal they are pretty clearly 2 distinct genres.

Also if you look at electronica or jazz or most other styles of music you find that they are also divided into lots of sub genres

I'll only listen to some metal. Most of it these days is fucking terrible, sadly.

Oh come on. You'd be a bit fucked off if you were after an act like Cannibal Corpse and ended up getting Poison since 'it's all metal' :)

Haha you're right, I can understand like, Heavy Metal, Metal, Death Metal.

But people put themselves in a genre to make them sound new and unique, so they make one up! Annoying!

I perfectly understand the need for Labels as comparing David Lee Roth to Pantera wouldn't make any sense at all. Just seems that when talking about the metal scene it has gotten out of hand.

Musicians will surely draw inspiration from different branches of metal, and create new sounds or ways of playing, that's how music evolve but the staggering amount of branches in Heavy Metal just seems redundant to me. :)
