Seems the BBFC have rejected Manhunt 2 for release in the UK (BBC Article)

Personally, I think its a good decision, it was unbelievable that the 1st one even got through. I'm not one who thinks video games and TV turn kids evil, but it says something out society when games like Manhunt are considered "entertainment"

What chance do I have then? :( I'm going to have to stop starting threads in dangers of becoming the "old" poster :(

It does work just type manhunt into search to see the other threads on it :p

Its still a bit annoying that there is a minimum word length.

eg. 'manhunt' is fine but it won't let you search for 'manhunt 2' as its too short. :S

Still better than no search.

by banning it it's just gonna make people want the game even more, kinda counter productive imo

The first game was shit... it was only popular on the fact it had so much violence in it.

theres another game in the news now that has footage of jamie bulger being abducted in the background (who spots this stuff???) talk about free advertising

"This game is so violent its disgusting blah blah blah blah" (at the point where the blaahing starts is where most people have tuned out and are thinking "Orly... i'll be getting that then")

I dont think the negative hype would be half as bad if Rockstar werent covertly advertising to kids who are below legal age to buy the game.

I used to work in GAME, and the number of 11 and 12 year olds who tried to buy Manhunt just made me sick. Worse still, the number of parents who bought that and GTA3 for kids who were still in primary school just makes you wonder how much people care about what we let influence the younger generation.

If you want to buy pr0n, you have to be 18+. If you want to buy booze, you have to be 18+. If you want to buy Horror-Splatter movies, you have to be 18+. If you want to buy weapons, you have to be 18+. If you want to drive a car, you have to be 18+.

So what´s the deal with games? How about.. like.. DO NOT SELL THEM to underaged people? And how about asking the parents to do their job and actually take care about what their children are consuming?

Here lies the crux. Everybody keeps telling us how bad those games are for kids. But hey... they are not designed for them! The attempt to "ban" them has exactly the same effect as the "PARENTAL ADVISORY, EXPLICIT LYRICS" sticker on CDs some years ago. The artists tried their best to squeeze in at least one norty word into a song, so they would get the sticker.

I agree that the industry (i.e. Rockstar in this particular case) shouldn´t advertise those games to kids. But regardless whether they do or not, you can´t solve the problem by banning the games.

P.S. I know that the DO NOT SELL THEM part will trigger a "but you can get them on the internet for free" argument. So? You can also download pr0n. Yet, they don´t want to ban pr0n.

AFAIK - if you suspect a lady is buying a game for her son - you can refuse sale.

It works that way with cigarettes & porn mags. If you suspect an adult is buying them for someone else, you can refuse sale.

I think all the 18+ things you listed should be banned too heh (well apart from Alcohol in moderation!)

I spent so much time telling the parents who were buying the game exactly what content was in it, explicitly mentioning it was in no way suitable for anyone under 18 and would still want to buy it because "everyone as his school plays it".

If I owned my own store I wouldnt have sold them to those I knew were buying for their child, but the store manager only cared about sales, and the amount of heat I would have got for not selling would never be worth the £4.50 per hour I was getting paid.

I agree with your points, but the truth is we are living in world where no one wants to take responsibility for anything, but they want to live life by their own rules. This action was taken for the good of society, but yeah, where does it stop. Is every little thing going to end up being decided for us, because the majority dont play within the rules?

tbh i thought manhunt 1 was fantastic for the first 10 minutes then i quickly realised it was the same cutscenes every kill (depending on weapons ofc) so i kinda got bored fast, but then i'm not a fan of sneaky stuff i prefer to rampage in

ahh come on now Raven
weirdo lefties are nowhere near as good at banning things as the daily mail squad are ;)

it's funny though
a few years back a work mate gave me postal 2 (he circulated it around the whole office)
and a few days later we were all sitting at lunch talking about the game
I asked them if they had

poured petrol all around a house
went outside
poured petrol on a dog
set the dog on fire
kicked the dog through a window setting the house on fire
and shot everyone who was running out of the house

two of them called me a sicko and got up and left

I thought
pfttt, it's just a game
not even a very good game at that
and certainly unlikely to make me start blurring the lines between a PC monitor and real life

the next day I overheard one of them tell the other where to download the no clothing patch

moral outrage and hypocrisy are all too often wrapped up in the same package

I still believe that anyone caught buying 18+ games for minors should be given as much of a penalty as them buying alcohol for them. Get a few lawsuits shown nationally and less people will be inclined to sell them. If it's the stores themselves being sued for selling to a minor or the parents giving it to a minor, it doesn't matter; it's just plain wrong.

No I'm not one of the PC crew. Tbh, games and such should have freedom to do what they want and if people don't like it, they just don't buy it...simple as. Just the age tags should actually be forced so that those who don't know better don't get subjected to things they didn't really need to see. Put a 21+ tag on it if necessary, just don't start banning games else the thing will never stop. Every 18+ game comes into the gray zone of what's morally acceptable, who's to say the next GTA for example isn't going to now be banned too on the same basis?

Games are a tricky area tho, since 95% of them wont be rated by the BBFC, but some guidance advisory board. Only BBFC rated games will get you jailed if you sell to under age kids (in the UK) because they are treated the same as movies.

Some tags on games are just absurd though.

Like Resident Evil 2 has a 15 tag iirc. Why? It was only fuckin zombies & blood & the blod was such a shit graphic it didn't really matter :l

I don't believe a vast majority of tags, in both videos and games. This isn't what I'm arguing. Personally I think It'd be much better if games like GTA weren't even shown to pre-18 year olds and other such movies like Die Hard shouldn't be an 18. I don't personally think swearing is such a big problem, so long as kids are taught there is a place and a time. I don't even swear in front of my parents as a sign of respect and I'm 23 years old.

There is something seriously wrong with this generation and I don't know what it is. FO if you think it's because I'm an old bastard (aimed at no-one), I just think respect should be imposed on everyone at a young age.

I just think that when I was 12 years old in secondary school, I wouldn't even of dreamed of swearing at a sixth former. Yet when I was there, they would swear at everyone and I for example would have to try my best to really annoy them back without swearing which lets face it, isn't all that hard to do. It doesn't take back the principle though.

Dunno where I'm going with this really but laws for me should be absolute, so long as there is someone who can be trusted for the role of choosing these laws. This hereforth causes the catch 22, whereby no human is completely innocent, nor able to carry such a burden.

What to do about it? Fuck knows...just so long as good people keep standing up for what is right, the species will continue to exist...if not, game over :p

And holy shit, what is wrong with my enalogies (sp?); drunkardness does the strangest of things to people :D

If a psychopath plays manhunt and makes a bad choice, a game made that person into what he is? The real nutters are those that fail to distinguish between whats fake and whats real. Anyone who fails to draw the line is the one with issues. Plus I'd rather take out aggression on a game/movie/tv/music (same difference right?) rather then doing harm to something/someone/substance. People by nature love to blame things on other things to detract themselves from the root of the problem.

If you buy a game, just play and enjoy it. If you bought it knowing you'd be mortified, you'd be the one that needs a mental exam.
