Can't be arsed telling you everything I know (tv cameraman), but just a few tips:

Light - light is key. Literally. Crap lighting = crap picture.

Rule of thirds - try and place the horizon on either of the two lines you imagine to vertically separate the frame into thirds. Depending on which is more important (the ground or the sky). This also works horizontally.

Perspective - use lines of perspective (ie a road disappearing into the distance) to 'point' at your subject, or to lead the eye into the subject.

Depth of field - varies according to lens apeture - basically, the smaller the depth of field, the more you have to focus. When the iris is fully open (low light), depth of field is very small, when the iris is almost closed (bright sunny day), depth of field is huge. DOF also varies according to focal length (zoom). You know when ur watching telly, and the camera focuses between two people having a conversation, some distance apart? That's using DOF.

Story telling - cos that's what you're trying to do. You're trying to make a 2D image look like a 3D image, and to convey a story. That's the creative bit.

Hope this helps.

Don't go to Jessops. Last time I had photos developed there they told me with a straight face that they nearly called the police and not to bring photos like that in again. Looked at me like I was scum.

What for? A couple were pictures of my two year old daughter in the bath - top half visible only, and they were important because it was the last roll of film I was going to use on her before my missus moved away taking the baby with her.

Utter bastards. (Jessops, not my ex and daughter.)

There is too much of this shit going on now.

The thick twats they employ in places like boots and jessops seem too stupid to tell the difference between child porn and your kid having a bath ffs.

Hey guess what?
My parents got taken to court over a similar thing.
They were of course, found not guilty.

oh btw developers are legally obliged to contact the police if they find anything like that.

They dont know if your the parents or some random molester person, although imho they should treat it with a great deal more respect and caution then they do atm and have done in the past.

I would imagine Paedophiles are a bit more intelligent then to take pictures of that nature to the shop - digital camera stills don't need developing.

I'm waiting for a roll of B&W that I shot a couple of weeks ago to be developed, if there are any nice shots I'll post them up here for you to laugh at. :D

Or polaroids, or video cameras.

Honestly in 99.99% of these cases the people are innocent.

A paedophile would have to be fucking stupid to take those sort of pics to a shop.

Cannon EOS 3000 is a nice beginners SLR comes with 35-80mm Lens fairly cheap to get a wide angle one & a telephoto say £150.
Tripod £15 quid flash £90. Oh camera is under £200 pounds no i believe.

Incidentally, if you were thinking of going the whole film route (and it is a whole lot cheaper than getting a digi SLR), a film scanner could be your friend if they're going to go digital any way. This means you'd only need to develop, not print your films which is cheap to get the kit for, though the film scanners are a fair bit.

A tip for B&W though, try not to look at colours so much. Once you start noticing edges and textures you start seeing much better photographs, but you have to make a concious effort to do so. B&W makes people look at things differently, like a bit of wood suddenly becomes interesting as the lack of colour means they don't instantly classify it as a bit of wood and ignore it, rather they see the textures and patterns on the wood itself, and appreciate it asthetically.

Interesting off-spin - just watched One Hour Photo. Class, anyone else seen it? Then again, and after much cider, I also enjoyed Evolution. Should I be ashamed?

I have a GCSE in photography, bu can remember little. Tom is a TV cameraman, wow... If you ever worked on BBC sci-fi, my first born can be delivered recorded post to any address.

The snake, or the moth?

The moth is a hummingbird hawk moth, quite rare in this country apparently, and it really looks like a hummingbird when it's feeding.
