Mages and +spec

mages, please clear something up for me :)

do you, or do you not, get anything from having a skill (void/light/mana etc..) higher than your level...

thing is that i have, inc RR, +9 mana, i also have specced mana to 39 at lvl 39, ie full, am i getting anything from having 39+9 mana? or would a straight 39 mana make no difference? reason being that i'll be speccing mana to 50 for the final snare DD (when you look at it there is NO reason to only take mana to 48, you get pretty much nothing in return in your secondary spec from it, whereas going from 48 - 50 in mana gives you the best str/con debuff and the final snare DD which will make a BIG difference considering it's your primary DD) so will 50+11 mana or more actually do ANYTHING?

if it doesnt do anything i can use +light rather than +mana to boost my secondary spec instead, but i was wondering if it affects damage cap? damage variance? average damage etc... when you over spec a mage spell line, problem is i've heared that it does the same as +recurve bow, ie increases your damage cap by a certain number of points each skill lvl over your level, i've also heared that it does nothing in mages which is a bit crap i think :(, anyone know for certain?

would test it but i'm at work, and if someone already knows :), well will be nice to also have the info available for people who would like to know but can't get any +skill items to test it yet due to level.

i can't be arsed to read through your whole thread but to reply to the first question.

In rvr it does not matter if u have a spec above 50, since the enemy is 50 and anything above that does not matter, if u had 49 in a spec line and someone had 50 and u hit a lvl 50 mob, the guy with 50 spec would do more dmg than you.

In pve its different, you do more dmg the closer your spec is to the enemy mobs level, that means if someone have 60 in a specline do more dmg than u to the the mob if ur spec is 50.

Anyways when you hit level 50 and dont care about how much dmg you do on mobs, you should not worry about how much + you get in a spec line since it does not affect in rvr, since all enemys are level 50 anyways.

It does, depending on what level your enemy is and what level your spec line is, you do more dmg if your specline is same level as enemys level, but the dmg wont increase if its 10 levels above it either :)

So you mean that if I have 30 in valor and hit for 100 dmg on a char that is lvl 30, I'd hit a lvl 40 for i.e. 80 dmg?
But then if I specced 30 and got +10 so the total would be 40 but the spell was still the same I would do 100 on a lvl 40 as well?

Since I'm a mentalist + to light over 50 lets me hold higher level pets.

A formula seen on many occasions for pet level is: level*0.6 + lightskill*0.4, and it has been reliable for me.

I have 45+15 light, so this means I should be able to hold level 50*0.6 + 60*0.4 = 30+24 = 54 pets, which I can.

Before RR5 I had "only" 59 light and then level 54 pets was a bit dangerous and resisted occasionally, now I dont have a problem with it.

Damage-wise I dont know, think its the same as if I had 50 light.

ahhh, well since i'm still in pve i can use my +mana to nuke purp mobs better for grouping, then swap to +light at lvl 50, thanks people. :)

I capped my +mana (had +11 before I realised it made no difference) at lvl 42, and my nukes against lvl 50's were remarkably lower than against players closer to my level (I think I saw one yellow con in emain when I was 42 :p )

but then again, I'm totally gimped.. thinking of rerolling a bard coz Nol's DD shout just about does more damage than my DD snare.

No, you'd do less. However you'd do more damage to the level 40 than if you had 30 valour.
You always get some level adjustment on damage, however it's less if you are overspecced and hitting a higher level target.
